Hello everyone :)

Over the past 2 days i have been having really bad ping and latency in teamspeak and in games. But im not sure if its related to telkom or to my line maybe or my router :P? My router is: Netgear Wireless ADSL Firewall Router DG834G (New one now lower in the thread)

My other problem is with my router, whenever i unplug the cable and plug it back in. it just erases all the data it had before it was unplugged, while it used to save it. It has only started happening for a few months now while it never used to do this, i really want help to fix this problem as i have tried to find out what may cause it but nothing thus far.

I would really appreciate any help :)

If I recall the netgear DG834G is a really old router so I'm guessing you've had it a while. If your router cannot retain its settings then you're looking at hardware failure in place. The bad latency can be caused by packet loss (or just the router sucking), you can check that by going here http://freeola.com/line-test/ and running the test.

That line-test keeps failing probably because of the firewall on my router it says :P. I have been looking at getting a new router for a while, just dont know which one.

But then the problem also might be with telkom :P

Alright i just got a new router to see if it would do any good, but no luck. sitting on 200-400 ping at the moment with my connection dropping alot :/. Anyone think it would help to change isp or something? I really need to fix this asap!

Any fast replies would be appreciated!

Go into your router, get the line stats and post them here (screenshot wil do).

How do i do that on a D-Link DSL-2750U Just got this router and trying to figure out how to use it. By the way my ping was around 30 this morning and last night but this morning i was fiddling around and restarted the router and when it reconnected my ping was 200-400 :/. At the moment im sitting on ~45 ping and it spikes up every 30 seconds just about to ~100 ping

Ponder how would i see my line stats :P, sorry im a newbie :D

Edit: Figured this is what u were meaning - http://prntscr.com/3y9ymi

Now im getting constants or higher ping than this http://prntscr.com/3ya2ei http://prntscr.com/3ya3za

Also just took another screenshot of those stats while i had high ping: http://prntscr.com/3ya5er

Your line seem to be the problem. If you look at your SNR and Attenuation rates they are way to high.

Before you log a fault do the following:
Unplug all unnecessary equipment that is using the line to see if there is an improvement. (telephone, alarms system etc.)
Use the new patch cable that came with your router to connect the pc to the router.

That's because it's multiplied by a factor of ten. To get the real values divide by 10. SNR & Attenuation seem OK but the upstream snr does seem a bit on the low side.

You can also try other modulations (currently adsl2+) to see if that helps.

But yes disconnect all other devices and filters and test only with the router connected. (you do have filters for the phone etc?)
With only a phone connected lift the handset, dial 0 and listen for noise.

Download WinMTR and run that as well specifying a local SA address.
Who is your ISP?

Ok i will try this when i get some time, My ISP is telkom.

One thing i dont get though is why suddenly my ping went from 30 after restarting router to 300-400 now :/

Are you downloading while doing a ping?
Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

Oh when you use winmtr use this address to test with durban.spdtst.saix.net
Use the same for ping and traceroute

Testing with durban.spdtst.saix.net at the moment and im not downloading at all while doing a ping as i just sit and watch my ping on teamspeak go from 150 all the way up to 300 then stay there... Using a wired connection

Edit: Here is the test:

I still maintain your line suck or there is major interference.

Use Zertops line tool to test it.

Your maximum ping was 13ms

Looking at your average ping, your line seems to be running perfectly :-)

So the line seems fine?

I lurked on and found his other tool ("Is it my internet tool") and these are the results. (I did the large test which is 20mb)

Do you guys think changing ISP would help at all? Or what do you think the problem is, really want to fix this soon.
