Telkom answers SMME criticism

... and any self-respecting business, especially SMME's, would do their international or data calls during night as well. Telkom has bordered and fallen off of what is considered insane or absurd.

Bunch of monkies...

<added>And seeing as Telkom fails to note the fact that there exists a thing called different timezone's, I totally want to kick the person who did their impact study in the nuts till they pass out</added>

BTW: I'm a SMME and I use LCR via Vodacom for my cellphone calls. Local calls are about 50%, 25% long distance and the balance International to Botswana.

kaspass

Can you please elaborate on this , what an LCR is etc?

Thanks :)

What utter bullsh!t!
They are simply further abusing their monopoly position by rebalancing their tariffs to make competing services unaffordable (fixed - mobile), reducing costs where they vulnerable to competition (international) and forcing users into their high cost protected monopoly services (telkom - telkom).

Hi Adlo

I think MyADSL’s criticisms will get increasingly difficult to respond to. I have heard the same responses from Telkom for nearly 2 years now, but I usually take their previous excuses into account when doing a press release. They will therefore have to find new ways to explain their exorbitant pricing, their lack of international competitiveness etc. I really can’t wait for the ICASA hearing…I just hope they are forced to respond to all questions, and not allowed to just make blanket statements.

Please note in the Telkom excuses how they include bandwith issues in the R640/R800 monthly line costs. They call is network usage.

Business must pay more because they use more...

I though the ISP account paid for the bandwidth/network usage!

PCW - LCR = Local call routing - a device that will route outgoing calls to Voda cell networks using a Voda cell phone type device instead of going through teklom, and Mtn cell calls using a MTN cell phona type device and telkom calls through the usual telkom lines.

By doing that, you skip the massive "change of service provider" fees that everbody charges.

<EDIT> Damn i type slow.
LCR = Lowest cost routing ...<EDIT>

Ok, I have heard a lot of rubbish from Telkom but really, this is one of the best.

Ok so they trying to make it more competitive? Then why are Local Cell calls R1.86 per minute and calls to America & London R1.70 per minute?

Are you telling me that more people phone America & London than they do cell phones?

There is only 1 thing I care to say to Telkomonopoly:

We really are not that stooopid to believe Telkomonopoly's propagandistic spin!!!

Hi guys

We must congratulate ITWeb on their reporting though. Although Telkom is one of their major advertisers they write objective and informative article. And have you guys noticed that Telkom is often referred to as “The monopoly” in ITWeb articles? :D

By decreasing international phone calls, increasing or "balancing it out" local calls, decreasing their staff (although they outsource, which is a phenominon not only true to Telkom, but other companies as well, like SARB to curb government's demand for affirminative action and "quota's")....

They're just milking the South African public even more, because they know for a fact we can't do without local calls, and because it's hellish expensive calling overseas and less and less people do, they're trying to subsidise the one with the other, in the mean time increasing their profits and being able to hide behind the excuse of "making it more affordable for everyone"

That is why I'm with MTN and a wireless internet provider.

What a load of rubbish. I wonder why it took them so long to reply... maybe they should have taken a bit longer to think up better excuses.

I received a phonecall today from someone from Telkom Capetown, asking, why I cancelled my subscriptions with Telkom. After I replied and explained, he told me, I should come first with my critics to the people concerned, before going public...

Nice try...

I work for a rather small insurance underwriter and I must say that the telephone costs for the company as a whole are rediculous. 80% of calls made by this company are to cellular phones. We've tried implementing regulations to force our claims administrators and brokers to call people on land lines but in truth this just doesn't work. Our clients work during the day and refuse to use their office phones(good for them), while we simply do not call them at night, our office is closed. Telkom doesn't offer any solutions for problems like this, they only cause more. I personally fail to see how it could be cheaper for me to have clients outside the countyr than it is to have them inside our borders.

To cut costs though the company is looking at other solutions, like those that have been explained here. The use of LCR's is increasing day by day and you actually do have a choice in who you decide to use. I am currently evaluating the proposals of 4 such companies, we originally had offers from 13 different organizations to implement this service to us. As an example, the 4 proposals currently at my disposal offer savigns of R37922, R46578, R38945 and R41745 per month respectively. I can't say how realistic these estimations are, but if they even deliver half of what they propose to do its a reduction in cost to the company which can only be a good thing.

I find it sad that companies like the one I work for have to go to these lengths to try and reduce our telecommunication charges, other places in the world it isn't even considered, if your unhappy you just go to someone else. Its a pitty were so screwed over and the goverment isn't trying to do a single thing about it.

I'm sorry. But is it just me or is that retard suggesting that the line rental costs are more for a business because of usage??? Surely that is irrelevant as the service provider is responsible for bandwidth? All this shows is that Telkom have uninformed employees and they assume that they are taking advantage of the uninformed public. Truth is: Business can afford more than individuals. Sheesh how does a monkey like this do a press release?

The thing is they have this hat. They put a whole bunch of excuses written on paper into the hat, and whenever they get critisism they randomly pull out a paper...
