Telkom: back to square one

It said the MTN and Vodafone talks were inextricably linked

I wonder if this is because Telkom was trying to maintain a presence in the mobile market by structuring the MTN deal with some MTN equity thrown in. Here, have our fixed lines, give us some of your shares, and then we can finally be rid of Vodacom. Analysts have all agreed that should Telkom disinvest in Vodacom, it is still going to need a mobile partner, so maybe that was what the contingency was.

CEO Reuben September says the aim is to have between 15% and 20% of fixed-line subscribers on broadband digital subscriber lines by 2011 (from 8,5% now).

This is the part that really pisses me off: I still have to have a Telkom 'fixed line' just so that I can have ADSL. Not just the piece of copper wire that transports the signal, but the actual PHONE LINE SUBSCRIPTION!! Nice little scam Telkom's got going here...

If the SAT3 monopoly ended last month, will we be seeing a drastic decrease of the price of international bandwidth SOON???

As in this year or at the latest January next year?

Only when Neotel starts pumping on it hard. Expect it around middle 2008.
