Telkom bandwidth tracking must be mistaken!

Good day,

I received my Telkom usage tracker report this morning and it was surprising to say the least.

Downloaded : 1.3295 GB for the week
Uploaded : 46.1477 MB for the week
Total bandwidth used : 1.3746 GB for the week
Total usage for November: 1.3746 GB

There is not a chance in hell that I used that much bandwidth. The PC was off most of the weekend and although I did surf a little there was no significant downloads that could have occurred. I am not sure what happened here, but it is extraordinary to me that I can have a 1.3 GB downloaded stat after the 1st day of the rollover.

Anybody else picked up something funny with his or her tracker report? Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

PS I know that it is physically possible to download that much, but I am telling you I did not… Unless the bandwidth rollover occurred on the 30th of October! I did surf a lot on the 31st because I had so much bandwidth left over for October. Might this be it? If I count the physical stuff I downloaded so far since the start of November (I know because I place it in directories) it totals less than 90 MB… Surfing the web could be anywhere between that figure. Not 1.3 GB though!

I may have a few possible solutions to your problem:

Firstly, sometimes the bandwidth tracker only updates itself after a specified time. I know this is the case as often I have downloaded a lot of data on say the 10 and it sometimes has been recorded on the 11.

If you are running a home proxy, make sure you have a firewall to restrict access to it. I had this problem as well. I had a proxy server running and did not have a firewall to block outside users using it.

Finally, there are certain viruses out there that constantly access servers across the net. Scanning my proxy log files, I have often been shocked to see visits to sites that I did not even know existed. Make sure your virus protection definitions are up to date. This could also possible be linked to perhaps a trojan horse of some kind.

P.S. It could also be a telkom mistake. But, good luck trying to get your bandwidth back. I can assure you I doubt you will get it back. Count it as a loss.

You think yours is bad check out mine:

Uploaded: 1009.90MB
Downloaded: 1.07GB
Combined Total: 2.05GB

This is bull****!!! Download might be right but what the hell is up with the uploads...I'm on the phone now with these Telkom bastards. How can I upload over 1gb in one day...

Neobyte is right. From observing what people report, I deduce that there isn't a cut-offat 12am that resets everything. It all depends on when you disconnect. If my connection stays up after midnight, then Telkom will typically report the previous day's usage on the next day only.
That's why at 1155PM on the last day of the month I disconnect, switch of my modem, and don't go back online before 6AM.

So far I haven't had any carry-overs.

Hi Antowan and others

I have contacted Telkom, Telkom Internet and various other organizations regarding this problem. If they are restricting us regarding usage, the least they can do is to make certain that their measuring software is accurate. I hope to bring you guys some news soon.

That would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

The traffic goes according to the radius stop record. i.e. when you logoff. So if you start surfing at 6PM on the last day of the month and you logoff at 2AM on the 1st then that traffic is for the 1st of the month.

If you are paranoid/unsure, make sure you logoff before midnight.

but why should i have to logoff. From one of your other posts you mentioned another record sent every half hour. Why can't telkom use this record at midnight every night to determine the usage for that day. Then when the stop record is sent subtract the previous amount from the total usage. Quite simple actually!

I noticed that my usage for Saturday was carried over to the 1st of this month. Telkom should really make this issue a priority and get it right!!!!

/me goes off to demand my usage gets credited back.

I hear you, but the realities are not that simple. Save yourself a lot of hassle and don't stay connected over the month-end / month-start boundry.

Just for the record, I did ask Telkom to give me my Bandwidth back today via email which was the only way to really get the complaint through.

Will let you know of the progress...

Regards to ya all...

Have you checked the thread at

http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1082

and sent your details to RPM as requested?

Most probably you will save yourself a lot of trouble doing it via RPM.

I would just like to make it known that Telkom got back to me today regarding my problem with the usage tracker. For the record, I made my complaint known yesterday (13 November) and they compensated me (with much more bandwidth than I lost) for the error on their part.

I am happy and the issue is resolved. I just hope there are no more mistakes in future.

Regards
Antowan

PS. As I said, they gave me more than my lost bandwidth back, which is fantastic!

Hi Antowan

I am glad that Telkom refunded a few users. I lodged complaints with ICASA and with the SA Consumer Council about two weeks ago, and obviously this filtered down. I did not get feedback from Hans yet, but expect it later today or Monday. I think he might inform each user individually about the outcome of the investigation like in your case, so please let us know if you guys get feedback.
