Telkom beats Competition Commission

Well yes you can blame the government for the predicament but I think you will find that the present government had very little to do with the creating of the Telkom monopoly... in fact they are the ones trying to fix the mess!
As the majority shareholder in Telkom the only thing the Government is succeeding at is self-enrichment.

But you conveniently ignore the fact that it was not created by them... which was your insinuation in your first response to me!

Do you think the NP government would have relinquished control? I think not?

Guys I do not vote for the ANC at all but I do feel comments made about them need to be fair. And to pull them in and blame them for everything is not.

Bwana I am glad you underlined the word trying as I put it in there on purpose because of course I feel things should happen quicker and of course I know they are making money out of Telkom... but they did not create the monster, so perhaps people should start trash talking PW, FW, HF and the likes!

I believe they did when they privatised it in the way they did. Whether it was done nefariously or simply borne out of ineptitude the Telkom beast we know today is their creation and theirs alone because they have the ways and the means at their disposal.

no, they just made it worse... and have done NOTHING to fix it. I don't agree with you at all. What they have done is inexcusable and they are justly to be blamed for it.

You seem to be saying that you take issue with government having a major shareholding in Telkom and then you seem to say you have an issue with them privatising Telkom?

Disclaimer: I can't say I am not a lawyer (as sadly, I am :D), but I'm no telecommunications law expert. I will claim some expertise in the area of administrative law, which is what this case boils down to being about (excluding the actual substance of the complaint)...

I found your post most informative. Thanks!

Yes - I have a huge problem with the government being a major shareholder in Telkom and yes I have a problem with the way that they privatised it . . . surely its not that hard to differentiate between the two?

As did I - thanks. :)

In reality you are 100% uninformed and incorrect there:

Telkodemonopolies' monopoly status was enshrined in the Telecommunications Act of 1996, note that this was post 1994 [Jay Naidoo was MoC at the time], which means that the current regime is 100% to blame for Telkodemonopolies' monopoly status, the beast's extended monopoly status, and well as delaying the entrance of competition into the telecoms market.

More pertinent, is the fact that the current regime decided not to introduce any [effective] competitors prior to semi-privatising Telkodemonopolies in 2002, this strengthened the beast's monopoly status even further, and has resulted in exorbitantly high telecommunications costs which have hit the country very hard and over a long period of time - as a result SA's economy has also been suffering for a long time, and SA-based companies cannot effectively compete with international companies.

The reason the cellular network operators charge more in SA [particularly for voice services] compared to international cellular network operators, is quite simply that they have considerably large input costs from Telkodemonopolies and its monopoly status. Both Vodacom and MTN have managed to work around this and remain profitable for 2 reasons [IMO]:
  1. Telkodemonopolies has in the past refused, and continues in the present to refuse, to provide services to areas that it deems to be unprofitable; and
  2. The cellular network operators have worked Telkodemonopolies' laziness & incompetence to their favour by providing such areas with cellular services, and at the same time have achieved an economies of scale return on their investment into such areas. Millions of South Africans - even the very poor, have cellphones, and they use them simply bcos Telkodemonopolies does not want to provide decent services of its own.
It was Poison Ivy [guavamentalist] that delayed the introduction of CellC, it was Poison Ivy that decided to issue an unclarification speech stating that VANS could not self provision their own network infrastructure, it was Poison Ivy that delayed the ECA [formerly the Convergence Bill] and ICASA Amendment Act by inserting herself as the ultimate power into the draft legislation, it was Poison Ivy that delayed the introduction of the SNO [NeoGhost], and Alec Irwin that decided to muck about with Broadband Infraco and deny NeoGhost ownership & control over essential network infrastructure, it was Stalin-Mafole that together with her husband delayed all submarine cable projects for many months...

Those are just a few highlights - there are many many many more which lay the blame squarely at the feet of the current regime.

Just accept that there are forumites that know a bit more about who is to blame than you do.

PS: ditto - thanks to Smeagol668 :).
