Telkom buying MTN

Finweek writer Belinda Anderson on MTN's trading update and analyst suggestions that Telkom should sell its Vodacom stake and invest in MTN.

I doubt Telkom would listen to miss anderson (maybe it's some dude from the matrix  )

If they do, then Vodacom's service levels are sure to sky rocket, so I might be swayed to switch to them, as I foresee MTN's employee base to be culled much like what happens with Telkom.

Hmmm, then what would Telkom do with all those parking spots at Telkom's Barrack St exchange that are marked "Vodacom"??

Paint them Yellow of course. Both the cell operators co-locate with Telkom in their exchanges as this affords them the best redundancy for the 2 000 odd 2MB circuits that form the cellular backbone.

If Telkom had to buy MTN then it will really be the end...

Telkom/Vodacom/MTN versus Cell C

Now that wouldnt be fair?

If they buy mtn they will be forced to sell thair vodacom shares by the competition comission. The reason why they would consider buying MTN is that thy would be able to get a controlling stake which is not the case with vodacom at the moment.

If ICASA declared the mobile operators as being major operators would telkom still be allowed to own either of them?

well, as a (mainly) vodacom (pre-paid) subscriber, i'd have to say...

[cheerleader mode]

gooooooo telkom!

:D

i just wonder how this is going to be possible? sure telkom but might the largest in south africa, but mtn has operations throughout africa. their revenue is on par with (if not more than) telkoms. kind of like ananzi trying to buy yahoo

Well if this happens, then Telkom ownz all Landlines and all Cellphone operators ( Vodacom,Cellc(using vodacom network) and MTN) and they also control international bandwidth still. I bet they will then buy out the SNO.

W00t, 1 step forward, 10 steps back.

no no nooo, you misunderstood my apparantly insane cheer for telkom :)
according to the 1st post, they would sell their share in vodacom, and buy into mtn
and i just want a telkom-free vodacom... ;)
