Telkom cable theft cuts services again in hard-hit area

I would still love to know who do they sell the stolen cable to? Surely any company with the resources to reprocess the copper must find it suspicious when coming across this stuff.

They burn off the plastic sheaving, sometimes even melt down the copper into "bricks" and then sell it to scrap dealers. There are some honest scrap dealers that will refuse the copper, but the there are PLENTY who aren't.

The services will be progressively restored by Sunday 23 June 2013

That just shows me how bad Telkom services my area (Erasmuskloof, Pta) .. when cables were stolen last year I was down for 4 months!!!

If the morons at Telkom replaced all stolen copper with fibre after a few years they wouldn't have this problem, and they'd have a better network.

This really makes me wonder what random DSLAM I'm connected to. My number starts with 011 793 and my ADSL and phone are working fine (apart from the 60dB attenuation...).

Not necessary connected to a random DSLAM, did a quick look up on 011793 and below are the DSLAM's allocated with 011793

bromhof 3, bromhof 2, frangipani 2, kelly thompkins imax, maria elise 2, cooper table imax, bromhof 4, la provance, bromhof 1, bromhof 7, bromhof imax 2, bromhof 8, flambojant 2, bromhof 6, bromhof imax

(That's actually a crap load)

So you could be connected to anyone of these.
If you want to know your exact DSLAM you can PM your number and I can check.

It is a pity all that Vodacom cash didn't go in to fibre... But on a more current point surely they know within seconds a line is cut - how long does it take to get their private security guys to respond in a frikkin urban area?? How do the guys stealing it pack it away that fast too?

The cut the ends, attach one end to a high powered winch and roll it in as they drive away. Under a minute...

Surely the scale if this setup is not too hard to miss? Then again 1 minute is pretty bad ass fast, not going to catch them by normal response times and normal services. Are they at least replacing with that steel with copper coating or whatever the low-value option is wherever possible?

Smaller cables can be replaced with cheaper alternatives but the bigger main cables not...

If the ANC is so dead set on finding traitors then there! These freaking thieves are real traitors with their mega sabotage of the SA economy. But I suppose a party that does not have to work to stay in power could hardly care about little "mundane" issues such as this. There's just always more money to throw at problems isn't there!

What kind of person feels it is okay to live in a country and then just keep on burning it down? I just do not understand. It's like defecating at your own front door. What good is money to such fools? I wish they had the basic common sense to realise this for themselves.

Probably all for drugs and bling. What utter children!
