Telkom-Cell C merger rumours

This would be so awesome. Then Telkom-C can start a triple play service with IMS and IPTV and we can finally be rid of the evil monopoly that is Multichoice! </optimism>

hopefully some of Cell C goodness can rub off on Telkom :-)
with telkom's infrastructure and 'connections', cell-c could offer even lower pricing?
but.... would be loosing a (good) player in the telecoms field, that may affect competition?
still lets wait and see confirmations,

AKC mentioned shortly after he was appointed CEO that there was only room for 3 mobile operators and that one would have to fall by the wayside.Perhaps he already knew something then that we didn't.......

As much as I despise Telkom, 8ta's prices are good.

Who knows what they can do with their powers combined... VC and MTN must be kakking.

As the article states, for infrastructure. Would cost Cell C billions to catch up to Vodacom on the infrastructure side.

I also assume a merge would mean they would be able to re-farm a LOT of spectrum for LTE?

I don't think this is going to happen if our government has anything to say about it.

How would 8ta fit in with all of this?

8ta has a roaming agreement with MTN and Cell C has one with Vodacom. Would be interesting to see what happens. Would they merge? Or would 8ta be integrated into Cell C somehow.

What effect will this have on Telkom wired services? CellC are competition to 8ta, so would that arm of Telkom be absorbed? Certainly 8ta are a long way from making a profit. On the downside, I can see people being made redundant as "economies of scale" are put into effect. AKC had already shed quite a lot of CellC staff.

How would 8ta fit in with all of this?

I would assume 8ta and Cell C would still continue but share infrastructure so a centralized technical department but separate marketing etc a win win for both resulting in a proper big PHYSICAL third network to compete with vodacom and MTN.

They would probably be able to roam on MTN or Vodacom where needed but most importantly combined be able to quickly fill in the gaps in coverage especially with telkoms existing massive infrastructure bottlenecks like environmental impact assessment, backhaul to towers etc wont be the headache they currently are for Cell C.

I do not really know if this could be good or bad. Since Cell C has come into the market they have initiated a lot of good things the other mobile operators were bound to follow. They were the first to advertise per second billing. They came out first with real high speed braodband at a good price at the time. And they were the first to introduce flexible mobile packages. They are also on a constant drive to decrease tariffs. Telkom on the other hand are infamous as a monopoly and market position abuser and has been known for charging exuberent tariffs. The business philosophy seem different, and so far Cell C has had the better one to do business with according to me.
