Telkom really are causing problems in my industry (web/software development) and is forcing a lot of people to move to the UK,US or Australia to continue their careers...

I would have a million more opportunities in the US or Oz than I do here and a lot of that is down to bandwidth costs... We can't innovate since no one can afford to use the sites.... Frustrating beyond belief.
 
How the hell do Belgium and the Netherlands have such high local call rates. Something doesn't smell right here.

Reports such as these tend to be meaningless unless compared to income.
A belgian (as an example, albeit a flawed one), may, on average, earn 10 000 Euro a month. In this case 14c US is cheap.

Yes, it is incredibly sad that an SA webmaster's biggest nightmare is that not that they will receive too few visitors, but that they will receive too many.

Hi Gatecrasher

This is indeed the sad truth. We kept back the photo section exactly for this reason…and a video section is simply not financially possible. I hope this will change in future…
 
How did SA's cellular charges fare in comparison to the same countries?

This is so upsetting...

My gaming site is hosted internationally so I don't have that problem but if all of a sudden my wife received a huge amount of hits it could easily destroy any savings I might have...

I know another local site got hit with a R14k bandwidth bill in one month because his site took off...

I also suspect that these are calls that take place outside of packages. I'll bet that 99% of their users subscribe to some kind of DSL/telephony package that drops that price considerably.

I really do not know how that R7600 is derived. Maybe statsa used the Telkom CEO salary and that somehow raised the domestic worked salaries etc?

But seriously, R7600? I doubt it.
 
What I love about this is the idiots harping on about "value added service bundles" and crap. If i bundle my ass with a packet of orange sheerrrbeerrrrtttt it may seem more apealing but its still my ass and a meaningless packet of sheerrrbeerrrttt.... and we remain to be reemed by the price they charge for this!

I love telkom logic!

I rest my case. But luckily ICASA found NO evidence whatsoever that Telkom's fixed line/ADSL prices were high. :)

PS : UK cell rates are off the chart. Last I saw was something like 23p (about 3 rand odd) for a standard sms.. on Virgin Mobile.

$0,75 x R7= R5,25

On my MTN Mychoise75 it is R2.75 a min so for 3 min R8,25. And we all know that pre-pay rates are even more.

But you get great contract deals. My friend got a Sony Erickson W950i on contract from O2 for £15 a month. He gets 800 sms free a moth and 200 min talk time. And the contract is only for one year.
 
It would have been nice to know what the lowest fees were or even the fees per country. You could find that every other country charges $0.13 for a 3 minute call. Would put the most expensive in world into perspective.

I suppose the US is the cheapest with locally terminated calls (our 50km radius calls) having no charge at all in most cases.

Fair enough. That sounds pretty awesome, but prepaid is shaite, but still better than roaming when you're up there for business or whatever. :)
