I received a call from Altech Autopage telling me I qualify for a phone/service. They called my mobile number and asked for a person, who's ADSL line installation I assisted with.
I ordered the service from Telkom on behalf of my client and allowed my mobile number to be listed as the contact person for the installation.
The only connection between my mobile number and the client's name is at Telkom ADSL.

It is therefor clear that this info was passed onto Altech Autopage, somebody obviously benefited as an individual or Altech bought the database from Telkom.

Just thought to inform my fellow consumers.
Is this unethical or what

In the same vein: I have a PO Box and have all my post delivered there, except for my Telkom bill, which is delivered to my street address (for FICA use, etc).

Now, only 3 months after installation of my line I start getting junk mail (RCS Loan offers, etc) at my street address. Also, although my number is unlisted I started getting research companies phoning me on my landline (practically nobody has my number).

It is obvious that Telkom is the one selling my name and contact details to research companies and marketing companies.

I don't know if it is just telscum. I don't have any details with them but I got a phone call "on behalf of" Altech Autopage yesterday.

Nearly stripped my moer then decided to go with it.

Apparently I got individually selected for a brand new cell phone.
Very exciting (I acted very excited and I noticed the lady on the other end became very enthusiastic as well).
So she explained how I get 100 free minutes per month (very cool!) and a brand new nokia model (I forgot what one) and it is sooo cool!
At least she explained that I only need to pay my "connection fee" of some amount (also forgot this) and bargain!
So all she needed was my workplace detail so they can deliver my brand new phone :)

At this point I asked her where she got me details and why they think I am stupid enough to fall for this sh|t.

I also informed her that I cannot wait for the consumer protection act to become law and put an end to this kind of SPAM!

And then I hung up. I must say, it was quite pleasant :)

Hehehe...same here man. 3 People have my home phone number...my boss...my mom and me. We didn't share my number so wonder where these salespeople got the info? /sarcasm

Luckily I didn't even provide mail details as I use the email facility
