Went into telkom direct to cancel my contract with them. But they told me that it would cost R7800:cry::cry::cry: to forfeit my contact. I'm on the closer 5 plan.

Is this the norm, as I read in their t&c's and it said that the penalty would be +/- R70 per remaining contract length. Of which I have 7 months left.

"The Bundled offering is subject to all of the above terms and conditions as well as the following conditions:

If the customer cancels the service before the 24-month contractual agreement period has lapsed, the customer will be penalized according to a sliding scale for early cancellation penalties, which is equal to R62.19 VAT excl multiplied by the outstanding months of the contract which will be levied on the customers final account"

Talk about misleading wording.

It leaves the option open for Telkom to say that the R62.19 (excl.) is the penalty part that is charged in addition to the minimum monies due to fulfill the contract to it's end.

Extremely underhanded.

You're basically better off (saves you the R70.90) to continue paying them till end of contract.

ie. in the thread about MTN/cellphone networks in general where we thought Telkom for once actually offered something better, we were wrong.

Basically if you are intending to cancel the contract, you will be required to pay upfront for the remaining months at montly value * number of months plus R62.19 xVAT * number of months.

Let this be a lesson to you all... contracts are bad Mkay!

I actually have a friend who got a Closer 5 package on contract... she couldn't get more than 384 K speed though, and the line is always down, but she has to still pay the R700 + per month.

As with me, I had a WORK 4MB line, then it stopped working... and they dropped my speed down to 512K. I had to threaten murder to get them to adjust my billing as well.
