Telkom defends high mobile prices

Nice article
According to the fixed line incumbent it is important for the Regulator to not look at the price of mobile services in isolation.
Telkom conceded that telecommunication services are a necessity in this day and age and can no longer be considered a privilege.
That's Telkom once again shooting themselves in the foot. Off course they would defend high prices when they have 50% in Vodacom.

Why was telkom even invited to this?? they don't offer mobile solutions?? how the hell can they even comment on anything in this area .... they are just trying to find ways to keep ICASA busy so that they don't come after them :) ....trying to keep ICASA chasing their own tails ..... unfortunate for us ... it doesn't take much to get ICASA chasing their own tails :)

This call for more market analysis begs the question as to whether these companies, who stand to loose millions if the Regulator does get involved to reduce mobile call tariffs, are not employing delaying tactics.
They just don't get it!!! Decreasing prices will UP profit - not vice-versa. Stupid people!!!

PS: I know I've been overloaded with work recently and haven't been able to follow the latest telecoms news, but when did Telkodemonopolies suddenly get another 1% ownership of Vodacom? - AFAIK Telkodemonopolies still owns 50% of Vodacom and not 51%...
Apologies, had a typo and hit 1 instead of 0 on the keypad :)

They wont die quietly or with any dignity, not with the obscene profits these firms make.
They have now been dragged kicking and screaming to the wall, gagged, blindfolded and offered a last wish. Icasa just needs to pull the darn trigger now.

What these fine firms are proposing will take a few years and its pointless as we all know the answers already. Delay tactics and nothing more.

They argued that there are many factors which influence the final retail prices, with capital outlay being one of the biggest factors to consider.
And the MAJOR factor is Telkom itself...

Telkom is glossing it over, and attempting to divert attention away from themselves...

Exactly! Good question.

Another question is why will Vodacom speak at the ICASA ADSL hearing next week. Vodacom does not have a ADSL product. How can it speak with any authority about ADSL. Any prices for guessing that Vodacom will return Telkom's favour of today and say that ADSL prices must be kept high next week?

hehe true. Also i suspect if they can get away with this, they will use the same argument fixed line prices.

The mobile operators rely on Telkom for services and has a cost influence on them.

Telkom however urged the regulator to focus on the facilitation of effective competition rather than regulation to ensure competitive prices.

F@cking Telkom - they gladly admit that they are screwing us out of us much money as possible because they have no competition...

ICASA: get your act together; your whole purpose should be to use regulation AND competition to stop such abuse.

Telkom would bloody defend the high mobile prices - they're partly to blame for the high costs with their interconnection fees.

Sheesh, really cheesed off now. The operators will do/say ANYTHING to stop regulation of pricing. ICASA should rather start listening to consumers now like they should be doing, rather than operators who they should be defending the consumer from..

The moaning and groaning from the operators is to be expected. Enforce changes, don't ask for permission!!!

They are majority shareholders in Vodacom?

Ahhh, we forget that should mobile operators be forced to reduce pricing by ICASA then Telkom is next in the firing line as the pricing differential between mobile and fixed line calls suddenly narrows.

Thus Telkom must say that it's important to do studies first, ie. delay as long as you can until you don't have a choice due to SNO who want to use fixed-mobile as the last mile solution.

Interestingly SNO has applied for licencing in part of the broadcast TV UHF spectrum as they're trying to use some antiquated equipment that's cheap to establish a presence.

Of course Sentech is vehimently against losing TV spectrum to SNO as they want as much as possible for DAB (there's a transmitter in JHB) and DTT (Digital TV) go to UEC http://www.uec-technologies.com/manuals/Al-Baha DTT750 User Manual.pdf They don't have the unit in their product list but they have it.

telecomp companies do need to recover the layout, but hell do they need to recover it ten fold? :(

Why do they even hold these hearings? Obviously every speaker is going to be biased towards their own cause. Its as though Icasa expects them to be honest or something  "Oh **** you caught us, we've been financially raping SA for 10 years, darn these damn hearings!".... Sure

Why not just look at the facts, get some unbiased opinions (if thats possible in SA) and make some decisions ffs!
