This is probably soooo unusual, just have to share it.

I ordered an upgrade from DSL384 to DSL4Mb @ 4pm this afternoon from work. By the time I got home @ 6pm, everything was done - no issues at all.

:D

Something's bound to get screwed up somewhere. Either that or you are one lucky SOB :p

Don't they have to install a new line to upgrade your speed?

I think we must give credit where credit is due!

Well done Telkom!

Mine was done in about 5 to 10 mins. I put down the phone to Telkom, thought after about 5 to 10 mins max that i should maybe try reboot my router, i did and i was on 4Meg.

It is fairly simple though (from what i have been told), it is just a signal that Telkom send to your local exchange and then your settings are updated to what ever you asked for. No real man power required as it is all computerized. You can run into problems if your line cannot handle high speeds such as 4 meg and other exchange problems. If your line and exchange are fine though, it is a simple process (but it has been proven to be a simple process that can take a fair amount of time for some unlucky upgraders. Suppose it is up to when the call center feels like processing your order, try catch them on a good day, Monday is prob not the best day of the week for finding happy people at Telkom :D

I was just told by a telskummel employee at 10219 but the techies actually go to the exchange in person:rolleyes:

That is what i used to think as well, but a rather knowledgeable friend told me that it is done via computer. To back him up, I cannot see how in 5mins of talking to someone on the phone at the Telkom call centre, a person would run to my local exchange and switch me over to 4megs, the guy would almost have to be psychic and waiting at the exchange in advance for it to be that quick.

That being said, maybe someone did just happen to be standing in the right place (at my local exchange) and at the right time to flip the switch in such great time :D ;)

I'm not being nasty here, you always have to take something with the word Telkom in it with a pinch of salt :) Makes life a lot easier in SA.

As Telskum is so used to not being able to fulfill their promises (where a REAL Telco WOULD be able), they are 'lowering the bar' so to speak. This way, they can say 'we have to send someone out to the exchange, so it will take 24 to 48 hours', and then when they suddenly have a burst of inspiration, they'll login on their computer and upgrade your line speed. And it gives them 24 to 48 hours to pass the application around between them, before they're 'officially overdue'. Looks REAL good on their 'performance reviews' when they constantly complete line upgrades in 8 hours, instead of the scheduled 24 to 48 hours
