Hey guys,

I am busy with an application to do this "do it yourself" service.
What i am going to do is try log everything i do and the steps i took so that if anyone would like to do the "do it yourself way",they have some form of guideline and if i make a mistake they can learn from it.

On Mon the 5th of September at approximately 2:30pm i went to the telkom office at 12 Adderley street Cape Town. I walked in and went to the sales desk (as i figured telkom are selling me something ) i was told to go to the adsl desks and pointed in the direction.

As i arrive, i notice there are two desks. one is empty and the other one has a lady in it, the problem is that on her desk is a sign that said, "Closed, please use next teller." So i look at her and say, "are you busy or what?" she looks up at me, says yes and continues to talk to her friend/co-worker. So i contemplate throwing her through the window, but realise telkom will probably charge me for it, so i go stand in the enquiries queue.

When i eventually get to the front (did i mention only one of the possible four desks were manned.) i tell the lady behind the counter, " i want to order adsl and your adsl people over there (i point) are too busy talking, so you will help me." So she kindly gives me a form to fill in and then after i fill it in i must go to the lady who is busy chatting.

So i do this and lo and behold the lady helps me, and she turns out to be a very friendly person etc :) (at that point i felt i made the right decision to not throw her through the window.) and she helps me.

As i am ordering the account in my dads name, i must get the form signed and fax it back to her so that she can process it.

The form is signed and faxed back on the same day.

The lady said she would phone me on tuesday to confirm etc.

Tuesday comes and i know she probably wont phone me, so to be polite i dont start phoning them at 8am, but at 9:30 am.
The phone rings and rings, and is transferred everytime after a few rings to a voice message thing, i dont want to leave a voice message so i phone back.

At 12am after phoning almost non stop for 2hours (not much 2do at work at the moment.) they still dont answer their phones. But i get a call back from the lady who helped me saying, "you were phoning the number?" i resist saying, "no not at all." She says she processed the document this morning and that she sent an email with the ref no etc.

So i phone the toll free number and wait 20mins for my call to be answered  and then follow up my application, which according to Nkolo (i think thats her name, line wasnt 2clear) should be complete by tomorrow - wednesday the 7th of september. Whereafter i pop into my local telkom office and collect my "kit" and install the line myself.

I have phoned an ISP on thursday the 1st of september, they answered immediatley, i am using Cybersmart, who are offering 3gb caps at R100. They are supposed to phone me today to organise an account. So lets see.

I will keep this post updated as close to the events happening as possible.

Hope this helps :)

O yes i ordered dsl 192.
Buying my own modem and using my own isp.

That offer expires at the end of october, and what i want to do for the first month is just see how much data i need/use and then after that i will see what my other options are etc.

Thanks tho, offer noted.

Not to burst your bubble :( or anything but as far as I know, when they say your application is complete it only means that they verified all the info on your application and forwarded it to the next phase (normally installations or some thing), it doesn't necessarily imply that your ADSL is ready to be installed!! Then they have to allocate ports and this is, were the wait normally is. I am still waiting. I am going to inquire bout the self install but when I get my DSLAM port is unknown!

3Gb for R100? not bad. I'm going the other way - bought 30Gb till October and will see what I need after that ;)

Ass Sazin'
Ye it is possible, but i think with this "do it yourself" system it is possible it is different as a friend of mine did it and it was done within a week.
Perhaps they give this system some sort of priority/quick check as if you stuff it up it is your problem and the responsiblity is on yourshoulders.
But yes i wont be suprised, will post all the info as soon as it happens, i.e 2mo il find out what the exact story is.

3gb for R100 is not bad at all, they are selling it below cost to build a customer base/loyalty. I asked them what will happen on November the 1st and they said they will continue the pricing as is. Also if you visit the website you can fix the price for 24months if you like, but i would not recommend this as perhaps with the SNO etc these prices will drop and then you might be stuck paying more than is needed.

This is from the Cybersmart website:
3 Gig CAP on 192/64 Kbs Circuit = R100.00
3 Gig CAP on 384/128 Kbs Circuit = R145.00
3 Gig CAP on 512/256 Kbs Circuit = R195.00
3 Gig CAP on 219/256 Kbs Circuit = R219.00

Different price for diff line speed -- how do they know what my linespeed is? That I get direct from Telkom -- and what is that last one?????

The last one must be the new 1024, just made a mistake on their website.
Im sure you can phone them and ask, they were pretty friendly 2me wen i phoned.

Update...

Right,

Well i picked up the phone at 9:47am and phoned the progress number.
I got through to a lady (Iyanda) at exactly 10:07, which i find interesting as i think the exact same thing happened yesterday. (have made a mental note for next time to see if this is std)

I asked her about the Progress of my application, and told her that the people i phoned yesterday told me that it would be complete by today.

"No no." she said, "the process takes about 21 working days."
"O really? then why did one person tell me it would be done by today and one person within the week?" "Because they are wrong, sir."

I also explained to her that i got the "do it yourself service" but everytime i mentioned it she said, no no 21days, so i think she has no clue what she is on about. or that the product exists.

"riiight, ok then, thanks for your help." :(
"bye"

I will phone again later and hopefully talk to someone else who is capable.
I will also ask what i can do to speed up the process as im in a situation where i need this available asap.(Lies :p )

Luckily the number is toll free, so i might just phone them constantly today, depends on how bored i am, hehe.

ciao

This DIY does sound like it is a good idea! they make make my line adsl i go get adsl stuff ,pots and modem, filters etc. Currently i have isdn, what happens to that then? the isdn box, surge protecter etc.

currently paying in the regeon of R800 av. R300 mweb satelite and 128k isdn with normal calls R500 so adsl 512 @ 477 plus 30gig account for like 250 shouldnt be to bad then....

Thing just is, will the isp's providing the 30gig account, will that then fall away after 1nov and be charge a arm,leg and a kidney then?

Thats the big question everyone is asking about the 1st of november, and as far as i can tell only the isp's and telkom know what the answer is...unless someone else can enlighten us.

You can sell your isdn stuff if you want, but i would suggest keeping it in the meanwhile.

DIY has no installation costs as you do everything yourself. Thus a saving of the R404 installation fee.

Update2...

i just phoned them again 12:04 after i saw a post with a guy saying his line was activated in 5mins  but i was lucky enough to only wait 5mins before my call was answered 12:09 by a friendly lady called eureka (sp) who said she was going to forward the application to the people who certify the self install and activate the line.

She said they will phone me when my line is activated.

So now i wait...But il go on lunch to walk the stress off :p

Hate to say I told you so!, ;) .One thing to note also is that the self install is only avalible in certain areas!I think like capetown and jo-burg.(but not sure which areas) I phoned them and i asked about the self install they said they will put me through ,blah blah!, then person B said it's only availible in certain areas, but made a note on my application that i want the self install, they should phone me today (Hopefully!)

Self Install steps

The process is actually very simple and can be done anywhere in South Africa:
  • Telkom phones you with the offer to self-install
  • You go to a Telkom shop where they give you a modem and instructions
  • You go home, install everything according to the instructions
  • You set up a PPPoE connection on your PC
  • You log on to Telkom where you verify your installation
  • They confirm verification and ask you to wait 30 minutes
  • After 30 minutes you are up and away
Possible problems may include the fact that despite telling you to install, Telkom themselves may have forgotten to activate your line. Your modem responds by refusing to sync (obviously). Just do not blink at this stage- just insist that they fix everything at the exchange and refuse their offer to send someone out to help you.
Obviously if you want to go this route you need to know how to set up connections - Telkom's helpline as absolutely and totally useless and I do not expect that they will be able to help you with this.

What happened is the retards forgot to put on my application form that i wanted the self-install option.

Telkom did not phone me, but i went to them.

But now that that is sorted out, they will hopefully phone me within the year...

Rule 1, of ZA customer service:
"There is no Santa Claus, No Easter Bunny and No one will ever phone you back"

You have to phone them. Twice a day 10h30 and 15h30 are good times. Write down your reference number and quote it to every person you speak to. Take down the name of every person you speak to, and what they promise you. Hold them to it and if they fail go straight to their supervisor. Get their direct number.
