Telkom "Do It Yourself Kit"

Dude, thats so much easier than getting dsl, it would still be easier if u stuck exhibit B in sideways without Exhibit A

Well my progress thus far is that i phoned them on Monday and said I wanted the self-install! (This after I ordered on 18 august and numerous calls! ) So they say ok everything is cool they will call within 48hours! I say GooD! Today I phoned them again and explained that Monday to Thursday is not 48 hours it is actually more!! So they assured me that the service manager would phone me tomorrow to finalize the self-install (known to telkom people as SIO I found that if you hit them with their own acronyms that they tend to take more notice, also say that you have preformed a
SIO previously, it may help)

Cool, ye im gonna tell them iv performed an sio previously and the service manager was supposed to contact me

I will also ask to be put through to the technical dept
If that doesnt work i will speak to the manager

Update 6...

Well...i didnt phone telkom

But i phoned in a favour with a guy i know who is somewhat high up in telkom (no clue what he does) and he said he will try sort/speed this up 4me. :D
Gave the ref no etc.

Will keep you updated on what he says and what happens.

So the best advice i seem to be able to give at the moment is find out who works at telkom and make friends. (Making friends with the lower positional people doesnt help. They r useless.)

Ciao

I put in a self-install HomeDSL192 order with/for a friend today [tried the other day but TelkoDemonopoly had the wrong ID number on their system...], anyways I will post if I ever discover what's in the self-install "kit" - don't know that I'd want to keep the togbag it comes in - I'd get pelted with rotten eggs, and then someone would plaster me with antitrust flyers...:D

As I said earlier - the self-install kit consists of a modem with filters and a CD as well as a printed document telling you how to verify your installation. If you have your own modem, the kit will only consist of the printed 3 page document.

After waiting more that 6 weeks I was offered the self-install option and installed my system on Monday. However, Telkom forgot to activate my line and I had to phone the CEO's office on Wednesday to get them to activate it. They did so in 30 minutes. Anyone with half a brain can do the self-install!

The kit itself costs nothing but I requested the Telkom USB modem and for that I paid R799. It includes 2 phone filters as well as a high quality lightning protector - I would say that makes the real cost of the modem about R450 to R500 with the rest being the cost of the filters and the lightning protector. My attitude is if I take their modem, there is no way they can blame the modem if something goes wrong with the service.

Update 8...

Well a telkom technician rocked up to my house today, and tested the line etc, apparently he left a number for me for support purposes, so when i get home il let you guys know whats happening.

I told them im not paying a callout fee as i am doing the self install and the guy said it was fine...so lets see.

It is a favour though, so i dunno.

I am supposed to be phoned and told to go get my instructions...like thats gonna happen.

As far as i know from what the techie said on the phone all i am going to need to do is install my modem and then get an account from an isp then connect...

Anyway il keep u guys updated.

ciao

Howd this happen...

Well i ordered my adsl modem last week mon, the same day i ordered my dsl.

My dsl is ready, and wait 4it...im waiting for my modem...i mean wtf, who would have guessed that happening.

Telkom are supposed to phone me to tell me to go get my "kit".
Suprise they havent...

What i can tell you about the "kit" is :

1. If you bought the telkom modem etc,
The kit contains that modem, filters and instructions.
2. If you are using your own modem etc, all you get are the instructions.

All i need to do is apparently plug my modem in and away i go...lets see.

I will phone telkom tommorow to see what the deal is with the kit...or if i have time now i will do it aswell and let you know.

Ciao

The end of the story...

Well as you know a techie came 2my house and exchange and sorted my line out 4me.

I got my modem yesterday, plugged it in, configured it, and bam, my dsl works... :D

I then go to www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl cos apparently thats what "do it yourself" people must do...and it gave me an error, make sure it is activated etc etc.

But my dsl is working fine, i can play games and surf the net, use mirc, p2p etc.

So who knows.

Hope this helped some people. :)

If you have any questions feel free to pm me. :)

Keep well.
Cheers.
