After all, we are all used to humiliation in South Africa (3rd World bannana republic)
 
If Icasa do become the postal regulator as well, these guys will probably end up being charged postage, per MB rather than per Gram. :(

My Fiance is doing some of the work in connection with CERN and JLAB. With pretty much the same problem. It takes for ever to get data and half the time it never comes though. She has found that its easier to download it home on our line (which I am NOT happy about as some of these files are HUGE!)

Its actually cheaper to get on a plane fly to JLAB in the USA spend two weeks there collect data and fly back than to try pay Telkom
 
I think ICASA has closed up shop and gone on a 2 month holiday, at least thats the way it seems.
 
Once again Telkom makes us the laughing stock of the International community, it makes me sick. You know we could be one of the best countries in the World if we iron out some of the problems, high communications cost being a big one

I spoke to somebody involved in the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project this weekend.

Apparently they require bandwidth going well into terrabytes (lots of 3 gigs).
And Telkom is pretty much screwing the whole thing up for SA.

From what I can tell, the annual bandwith cost will be greater than the cost of setting up the array. Which is R 10Bn according to this link.

Of Couse Telkom is a scientific company....

They can make those Green peieces of vegetation disapear right out of your wallet in an "neuclear" kind of way.... BOOM! Telkom is in the process of now trying to perfect it on the "Plastic" in your wallet.... read the Credit Card numbers using the ADSL modem and then make your bank-account disapear too.

The pipes connecting the antennae to the centralised correlator must have the capacity to transmit large data volumes because raw data rates (eg 100 - 1000Gb/s per antenna) preclude storage. As presently envisaged, resolving this performance requirement may require an input from the Europeans to achieve 2-3 Tb/s performance and negotiation with TELKOM or the Second Network Operator to provide and support it. They will also be long, 10's of thousands of km don't seem to be an unreasonable estimate.

I guess the only thing going for them right now is that by the time this goes up the new SNO should be working in full swing.. I hope for our sakes at least

No doubt about it. We'll have cheap bandwidth sooner rather than later. Everything Telkom seems to be doing is a desperate last-ditch effort to fight back, and they can't possibly last that long.

I think our main battle is getting it sooner rather than later. IE Before the end of the next 12 months. If they have their way, they'll leash us for at least another 2 years.
