I am not sure if this is a general trend but telkom seems to be downgrading the sync speeds on their 384k lines.

In the past my modem used to sync at higher than the stated speed which I understood was to allow for the connection overheads of about 20%. This policy it seems might be changed as my modem now sync at 384/128. This seems to have degraded both my throughput and latency by about 25%.

Anyone else also having this problem?

turn off your router for a few minutes and then switch it back on. Mine synched at 384/128 but gave me 192k speeds till i restarted my router a 2nd time. No idea why tho.. Also, yes it does seem the 128k overhead is gone, not sure how this affects line speed since i am getting full 384k speed. :/

I am surprised that no one actually thought of whats happening with the extinction of the 192, forcing entry level to be at 384.

This has been planned a long time ago but, the objective of that conversion is based on the principal that the majority will not be happy with the 384 (already downgraded) and will upgrade to 512. Think about this comment, it makes loads of sense.

When I applied for my line to be transfered, the operator automatically was going to upgrade my line to 512 because, she said, its only R3 more expensive then you currently pay on 384 (old price 384, prior to 1st August, comparing to new price 512) so, Telkom nice try but, you cant fool us, we have learned through the years that you will not just lower prices or upgrade lines free of charge, there is always something behind it all.

My personal view? DO AWAY WITH ADSL. Telkom should dedicate themselves to clean up Johannesburg and the other cities for the forthcoming World Cup (dream on South Africa dream on), after all, most of their staff can't even understand English properly, they belong to PIKITUP, they are just on loan to Telkom due to the back log of work that the incompetent so called techies, fail to bring up to date.

What is considered full 384 speed.

Where can you get a decent (proper) speed test done, please don't tell me to go to Telscum's site, anything those incompetent fools have or suggest is b***s*** .............

384kbps = 48kB/s max theoretical, in practice etc you can expect about 70 - 75% worse case, else there is something worth checking out. ie less than 268 to 290kps will be the bad end and above it would be considered normal.(obviously close to exchange, least links etc would give best results)
512kbps -> 64kB/s [expect greater than 48B/s]
1024kbps -> 128kB/s[expect greater than 96kB/s]

Anyone know what the international norm is tho ? full rated speed ? But other factors come in too.. like external links outside the wan network and their contention etc i think the agreements in products are for link speed from exch to home.. ie telkom speed test :/

The way telkom works out speed is by running the speed test, taking the full amount in Kbps and dividing it by 8, that gives you the true speed of your line :) I know, I sound like Gangstarr or someone, but I was lucky enough to speak to a good telscum rep.

Dividing by 8 is how you convert kilobits to kilobytes.

That's what I meant, but that's not what I said, lol!

My 384 line has gone for a ball of ****. My upload speeds have halved and download speeds are not the best either.Tomorrow morning : 1mb line here i come.
So because the line rentals came down in price that meant the quality and speed came down aswell. Sigh, Telkom, increase the prices so my line performance can increase. Thank you.

Hey, and 1mb will mean you get upped to 4mb soon...

This is prety funny though, now they resync all the 384kb lines, and everyone gets a worse service. they will probably tell the existing 384kb users that thier lines cant sync properly now and will have to go under 384.
