Hi guys, first time on the forum, hoping to get some opinions. Ive ordered the DSL 512 premium package from Telkom, Free home line and DSL installation, Free Modem, monthly rental for DSL access and phone line rental, call catcher (call answer, call waiting) etc. and 120 callmore minutes for R569/month. Wondering if this is a good deal?

Also looking for an ISP, any suggestions?

it seems a few rand cheaper than ordering each component individually. but if it's on a 2 years contract because of the free modem then don't fall for that. if competition arrives within the next 2 years then you stuck with telkom - paying their ridiculous prices, and even worse putting up with their service quality and pathetic offerings

EDIT: change your order to a 384k instead and save yourself 100 bucks. speed difference between 384 and 512 is minimal and not worth the extra R100. you could always upgrade for free if you feel the need to

Thanks for the feedback guys. Still new to ADSL, so trying to get opinions. Realistically, do you guys think that there will be competition to Telkom in the near future? I dont like their service at all, but gotta be a bit realistic with the speed at things progress in this country

The 384k line does sound the better option. Does Telkom give hassles when trying to change your order?

YES! If order has been finalized, if still in the first week of order status, it may be possible. Phone them ASAP and be prepared to listen to classical music playing in your ear for up to half an hour.

My dad's got the 384k Premium account, and it seems to be an OK package, except for the 24 month (sign your soul to the devil) contract.

I took the 384 supreme from Telkom and I am happy so far. Same savings and benefits as 512 premium but at the cheaper 384 rate. The contract can be cancelled at anytime during the 24 mth period by paying a penalty equal to your installation and modem cost times the remaining months divided by 24. I have also been assured by telkom that if the rates go down for the standard adsl packages so would the amount payable in terms of the contract.

i have the 2 year contract/free modem. works great, nothing wrong with getting it.. there will be no SNO in the next 2 years as telkom have sole telecommunications rights until 2007 (2 years). so if you want the free modem, go for the contract.. jsut make sure it's a billion 5100 :D

peace

This is not 100% true -- the only thing telkom has sole right till 2007 is the landing of SAT3 and whatever the east cable is called in South Africa. If ICASA does their job and issue the SNO license they can operate as soon as they can -- whether we the customer will see anything from them soon is a different story

I'm also on the premium package. Just a few things you should know about:
  1. The callmore minutes are LOCAL only
  2. The line rental is NOT included in the R477, this is just Telkomnese to confuse and make it look better.
  3. Watch your account with a hawk's eye, they started billing me for best friends after 3 months.
  4. Regarding the Billion modem, I didn't know I had a choice (did I really?), so got the ethernet modem

Other than that, I had my line activated within 14 days on the dot after I phoned. Actually, the guy came a day earlier, without the modem so I had to spent a delicious hour in the que to get mine (my own fault though, I faxed the contract late). Only thing, don't sign up for the Telkom internet contract, if you want your own email domain, it is going to cost you to much. Consider Web Africa and a mini hosting account. Hope this didn't drown you, just ask! :D

Realistically the SNO, will not be around anytime soon and even if they are they plan to market there connectivity to the high end of the market,

They will mainly offer wireless access and not point to point...,

They are not interested in the home user at all...
