Telkom Exchanges in Midrand.

Are the exchanges in Midrand different from Germiston or Springs?

I set up a asterisk PBX for my Father in law, but he gets unbearable echo on it. I then took the box home to try and resolve the issue and tested it there.. no echo. Brought it to Springs, again no echo :wtf:

The phones plugged directly into the wall in Midrand don't have an echo, and I brought the handsets from Midrand to test so its not the actual handsets either, or at least not the two I brought.

Could a different Telkom exchange cause the problem? Could it be one of the remaining handsets? or the actual wiring? Electrical interference? :confused:

Seriously doubt if it is related to the type of exchange, rather the line from the exchange via the MDF to the SDC to the DP to your father's premises.
 
As a PABX TECH a few years back I noticed some less expensive PABX solutions did not have effective gain control on lower voltage lines. Telkom sometimes supplies there lines through concentrators like UMC's and Telplus systems. In some cases the line voltage is lower than a standard Telkom line. In this case the less expensive PABX sees the lower voltage and thinks it needs to boost the audio levels because the line is "long" (too much impedance) resulting in overly loud side tone and a perceived echo.

Some PABX's have a long line / short line setting in the line menu of the PABX. Try both options

So since I am not familiar with the acronyms above, I googled them, this is what I get.

"line from the exchange via the Medium Density Fibreboard to the Sustanable Dance Club to the Double Penetration to your father's premises"

I'm still not sure what it means, but I gather that I'm kinda fooked? In a dance club? with a peice of board? :erm: :D

Seriously.. What can I do to sort this, or should I just dump the idea of a asterisk PBX there?

I been poking arround in the freePBX setup... I cant seem to find anything like that.. I have already tried to adjust the RX and TX gain.. Just made it worse....
 
Ok so did some digging around with some techies I know

MDF=Main Distribution frame....where the exchange is
SDC= Street Distribution Cabinet.....Corner of streets
DP= Distrubution Point......Box at top of pole where cable meets SDC

I have been in contact with the guys on the trixbox forum, and they say the problem is likely the link between the DP and my clean father's office.;)

He recently moved from one building to the one next door and had trouble getting Telkom to move the lines over... So he just got someone to like the two boxes using a network cable... So I'm guessing thats the problem.

My clean father is going to try and get Telkom to move the lines again..
If he doesn't come right can I pm you the no?
