Telkom explains new call rates

Telkom has to carry all calls originating from Gauteng destined for this VAN over long distance to the POI and one cannot compare it with Telkom’s local minimum call charge,” Telkom’s Steven Hayward,

And that also explains why I could make a call from Chichester, England to Johannesburg for 2p per minute (25c).....sorry I forgot that the Brits do not use "Chinese Maths"!

I seem to have missed the "explanation". In the words of Spike Milligan "it's as clear as mud".

How does this work overseas? Is the same methodology applied or is this unique to TELKOM and SA?

The net result is that these other operators will now be able to launch voice services competing directly with Telkom.

HOW???? If you have to price your service and include at least the amount that Telkom charges to interconnect you, and THAT amount is already more than Telkom's minimum charge for calls on their own network, then how, exactly, are you going to compete? Services? I laugh. No, I cry.

Die, Telkom, DIE.

Don't forget that Telkom need to spend more money on fuel to "carry the long distance" calls. From what I read it would appear that Telkom loads up all calls for "long distance" into a VAN (pun intended) and drive it to its destination. Therefore it cost more to "carry" the call as the VAN has to drive a longer distance, compared to your next door neighbour.

In the rest of the world "telephone conversation by VAN" was left behind when the stage coaches came to a grinding halt, way way back. They have adopted new technologies which allow an electrical signal to travel over wires, saving you time, saving you money and cutting down on "carrying" costs, i.e don't have to fill up any VANs with fuel. :p

People like Stevie boy are employed to do only one thing; think up excuses why Telkom over charge and rape the Country, and why they should be allowed to do so with Gov blessing.

Should have said 'in theory' operators can now compete :D. My bad, guess MyADSL needs a new editor :D

and after approval by the Communications Authority . .
. . I shall have officially lost all hope. :o

Telkom rates are here : http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/custtomer_to_automatic_exh.html

Per second calls to everyone except for Neotel (including the USLA's), are more expensive per second than Telkom's long distance per second rates.

Telkom's call more time rates are also cheaper (more than half some VANS).

And that's just assuming that it's ok to charge long distance rates to someone who could well be sitting next door to you :(

Soon we are going to need an accountant to assist us in the preparation of a formal request for budget in order to make the call to Mr Delivery to order lunch.

The mere fact that Telkom has to explain the call rates shows exactly how complex they made it. It should be self explanatory.

What does it say that they've sent Steve Hayward to do the explaining? :D

I tell you what Telkom:

Give us our money back that we paid for the SAT3 and you can keep your new rates. Otherwise feck off and die a painful corporate death.

I don't think Telkom understand it themselves!!

Many a true word said in jest...

Phone the call centre 5 times, speak to 5 operators (I know - impractical giving their performance and the 24 hour day......), and you will get at least 7 different answers.

I've asked Neotel for comment on:
1. Telkom's proposed rates to them,
2. Telkom's statements saying that Neotel did not request an off-peak rate

Are there any further comments anyone would like to make on Telkom's proposed rates? If I were to summarise the overall feelings-

1. The rates are confusing for the average consumer. We are moving into a space now where it is going to be difficult to tell the price of a call based on the number dialled.
2. The rates to USALs are excessive. USALs are competitors to Telkom in specific areas of the country where there is less than 5% fixed-line penetration. These are rural areas, and the consumers served here tend to be amongst the poorest in the country. Telkom's high rates to USALs should be lower in the interests of universal access goals.
3. The rates to Neotel are too high and will undercut the new entrant, and this will likely stifle the uptake of Neotel's fixed-line services. Why is there no Telkom to Neotel off-peak rate?
4. There is a concern that challenging the proposed rates will lead to further delays in getting the applicable number ranges operational. It is in the best interests for competition that these number ranges become operational as soon as possible, and a challenge to the proposed rates could cause unwanted delays which will be costly for Telkom's competitors.

Anything else to add/other opinions to be considered?

Big up to MyADSL though. Telkom must be longing for the good old days when they didn't have to explain anything because nobody was asking the questions...

I love you guys.

Oh, and die, Telkom, DIE.
