Hi Guys

I've just put in an application for the Telkom 100Mbps - 200gig bundle package. Can somebody explain to me the midnight Surfer concept.

Is this unlimited gigs in the midnight time? or will it come out of my softcap?

Thanks

Unlimited from midnight - 7am, does not come out of your 200GB.

If you use up your 200GB then nightsurfer stops working until you topup your data again.
Softcap usage avoid it, 384kbps, you will noticeably age if throttled to it.

Great, thanks for that. Just 1 last thing. The night surfer will that DL at the full 100mbps?

Just ordered through Telkom and my friend who has it already says the midnight surfer is not working for him. He schedules downloads from 12:30 to 6:30 and says it always counts against his limit. ADSL works fine but can anybody confirm they use it successfully on FTTH?

I have read somewhere on Mybb that you have to re-initiate the connection after 12AM to enable the night surfer data usage, otherwise the connection stays on the normal data.

Well will be able to say for sure end of the month if they install on schedule however that is hopefully wrong as it would seem a bit dodgy offering a service and then not performing it.

ranger said this was not the case when it came up for debate and several forumites agreed with him based on their experience.

edit: FTTH was not discussed.

I am on FTTH
I keep the session open
It does not count against my cap

@yogidabear
Have him check his account, it may be that he is not subscribed to nightsurfer ? (slipups do happen)

To be safe, schedule your downloads for 00h30 to 05h30. Apparently they have a slight overlap during the late morning hours. Its not a biggy for us guys with slower connections like my 4MB, but with a 100MB FTTH connection the overlap could add up quickly against your cap.

There is actually no standard for this - 12am/12pm - to avoid confusion it's 12 midnight
Nothing set in stone, but the vast majority use 12am = 00h00, 12pm =12h00

Doubtful. Even the old ADSL accounts cut over to nightsurfer cleanly.

Edit: Mind you, the late morning overlap might just be on ADSL lines and not FTTH, not sure.

Can somebody confirm they are using the midnight surfer option on FTTH speeds 20Mb/s and above. Spoke to Telkom and they are adamant this is only available for the 10Mbps option. Do not want to go for a 24 months contract without this option.

If you have it, please let me know when you installed your FTTH and what speed you have.

Technically they are correct, the pages only shows "Free nightsurfer data" on the 10Mbps. The data packages is all softcap packages, when you go read up on that it includes the nightsurfer. Reality is that all the softcap packages has the nightsurfer data.

What was included in the deal I took back in May, doesn't mention nightsurfer but I do have it.

I have 100Mb/s FTTH and 200GB Softcap from Telkom installed.

Nightsurfer works like a charm, I've downloaded 1.2TB so far for August, just schedule your downloads between midnight and 7am.

For a streaming user, the 200GB soft cap is a little low - wouldn't mind paying more for a bigger capped package if it was available. For now I'll have to be content with the odd topup here and there. Otherwise very happy with FTTH :)

I can imagine with FTTH 100Mbps you can really do damage during night surfer times. :)
