Telkom fibre speed question

To anyone who can assist. When I moved to a new house last year, I had the Telkom 10Mb uncapped fibre installed. And it worked fine, line speed was almost always full speed. Then in December, I decided to move up to the 20 Mb uncapped package. Now, the line speed fluctuates continuously. When I run a speed test the download speed will jump up to about 18/19 for a second or two, then stabilize somewhere between 8 and 10 and the upload speed hovers around 10.

Downloading from Steam maxes out at 1.2mbps. And my bill has both 10Mb and 20 Mb lines listed but with a massive discount attached, so I am actually paying less now than before.

Any ideas before I contact Telkom again will be welcome. Thanks

Factors that can affect speed:
1) Direct link via Ethernet cable or WiFi link to the router
A cable is not subject to interference and will provide a more reliable test environment.

2) Are there any other users/devices on your line during the test?
It's a shared line, so any Windows Updates / PS4 Game Updates / Other Users need to be isolated during the test.

3) Back-haul Congestion.
Telkom had for ADSL a 20:1 contention ratio, not sure if this is still the case for Fibre.
The IP Connect back-haul could be congested.
OpenServe IP Connect back-haul is expensive, so ISP's try to minimise the bandwidth they buy from OpenServe.

Using a different ISP will isolate the IP Connect.

1) shouldn't really be an issue at such low speeds, but yeah, check with an ethernet cable.
2) might, need to isolate.
3) backhaul should not be an issue here, more likely IPC or some mess up in terms of Telkom package.

Best bet is to try another ISP account and see if the issues persist.

Telkom you can use a normal account, so ask a friend who e.g. Has a Vox capped account if can share details with you so you can test.

Thanks guys. To update - I've uncovered the issue - when processing my upgrade, they upgraded the line only and not the account, so it's a 20meg line, but the Internet account was for 10meg uncapped. It's now in the process of being resolved.

You should upgrade to Telkom LTE/LTE-A, using the Telkom speeds compare tool - it's the fastest:

What the speed compare should look like:

They also fail to mention that the link speed of Fibre is 200 MBits/s, whereas the others are "up to" and "best effort".
