Hi guys,

Like other telkom fixed line rental clients - I have received the call today.

I am wanting to know more about the Flla service.

Does it work with telkom's mobile network or will I have to connect via wifi?

Is it possible to have more than one phone?

Any form of advice would also be appreciated

Hi

It works on the mobile network - you will be issued a sim card loaded with your number. No wifi. The sim card will either go into a FLLA phone - basically a GIANT cell phone or a Fibre Router that takes a sim card and then you an plug your existing Telkom phone into the router. The nice thing with the router is the cheapest package comes with 2GB of data so you actually get some internet in the deal.

You can only have more than one phone if you go the router route and then get a set of cordless phones that are all linked.

Its not as reliable or clear, necessarily as old fashioned copper, but it works.

Telkom Mobile with a Sim Sonke Plan might also be a reasonable option. If you want to add data you could load a Mo'Nice bundle (*123#) every month which usually cost around R15/GB.

For the same price as the FLLA service you could get a 30+30GB Afrihost/MTN Fixed LTE SIM and move your line over to a VOIP service with Freshphone etc. and keep your existing landline number.

I agree better to use a cheap old cellphone.
The D-Links are silly in that the display stays on permanently and the battery hardly lasts 6 hours.
Either you keep it on a permanent charge, which destroys the battery or you forget to charge it in the middle of the night and it switches off and you don't get calls.
I have left it connected to power without the battery until load shedding requires it.
 
Received our FLLA a few days ago and problems from the start.
Only dialed out and could not receive incoming calls.
Now it stopped working completely.
Says no mobile network available (funny - it used to connect to the mobile network just after we received it . . .)

Exactly the same problem here, client has no other option than to use this device - phone was set-up at Telkom shop 15km away.

Device worked initially - now it seems its lost its pairing with the nearest cellphone tower, and its located in a 3G/4G/LTE covered Telkom zone - and of course there is no physical TELKOM person to contact for FLLA phones specifically, the chat function at Telkom support doesnt work (waited 20 minutes during working hours - no reply on TELKOM agent chat), the mailbox is full at the Telkom shop....

FUBAR, TELKOM has the most pathetic service in the world
 
I don't understand why anybody would want a Telkom FLLA. Just port your landline number over to a VOIP provider and cancel your landline. That way you get rid of Telkom in your life, and you keep your landline number and your sanity.
 
We have a small self-catering establishment with access via an intercom at the gate. The intercom is linked to our Telkom number. We have been moved to FLLA and I would prefer a more mobile handset (cell phone style). What would you suggest for senior users? I was looking at the Nokia 2720 as a possibility. Any other better options for people with slightly failing eyes and ears.....
 
A friend of mine has gone onto the FLLA recently. He wants to know if he can somehow do an extension from the main phone to ring simultanouesly in another office 10m meters away.?

No, an FLLA phone is just a cellphone with a Telkom landline number, nothing more. You cannot do much with it at all.

Someone on the telkom "helpline" suggested he use a router with a RJ 11 plug ? to conect to a 2nd phone? Details are sketchy but will update if anything comes of it.

Yes, that might work. The router will essentially convert the digital cellphone GSM signal into an analogue signal through the RJ11 port. If you put an RJ11 splitter into the RJ11 port you could then have 2 phones ringing simultaneously. You will obviously have to remove the sim card from the FLLA phone and put it into the router. And of course you will have to find a router that supports cellphone calls with a sim card. Most 4G and 5G routers should do this.
