Telkom implements 10-digit dialling system

Telkom will be implementing the 10-digit dialling system today as per regulation by Independent Communication Authority of SA (Icasa).

Area codes will have to be dialled before all Telkom numbers. This will apply even if the caller and person being called were in the same area, said Lulu Letlape, the group executive for corporate communication at Telkom. The international dialling prefix of 09 will become 00.

Letlape said the number one would also now go before all existing telephone numbers for operator-assisted services.

I suspect that as of today it is 'official' but it will not be enforced until 16/01, (or in 3 months time).
