Telkom indicates HSDPA is grossly exaggerated

According to this article Telkom believe that Vodacom has exaggerated the advertised HSDPA speeds - in fact HSDPA is more like 512k ADSL (see the graph at the bottom).
Vodacom you liars!
 
As much as I would like to argue with Telkom and their article and graph, I am afraid for me at least it is realistic. I have had 3G and then HSDPA from when they were launched respectively and I have never been impressed or even satisfied with the speeds. I have after 21 months of 3G and then HSDPA resorted to ADSL from Telkom and the difference is really obvious.
 
I use both DSL and 3G.

3g's only problem are disconnects if the connection is idle and Latency.

DSL - just sucks outright - slow, cappry, international works when it feels like it and it costs more.
 
I agree with Telkom but I disagree as well.

Thanks to Telkom's high prices, technologies like 3G/HSDPA are being marketed as alternatives to broadband in SA - which by intnernational standards, is laughable, thanks to both Telkom and the Cell Operators.

3G/HSDPA is not that big in other countries. It's mainly used by business-people on the move whereas in SA its marketed to home users as an alternative to DSL! Go figure?
 
i only saw speeds of around 1.4mbit during the first week or so until everyone had switched over....

NEVER see over 700 now.... NEVER
 
So I think we agree hat while Telkom have a point, they are not in a position to point fingers...
 
Sure Telkom can blow their own horn about being the fastest but what about affordability? The cheapest adsl package (line, adsl access & isp fee) costs R400+ pm. This in no way caters for low end users. For the cost of a dial up line and isp fee low end users can get sufficient MBs from the cell phone operators to suit their needs.

Was discussed in another thread a few months back, and as with all of Telkodemonopolies' advertising claims, the whole truth was not portrayed by the beast, more importantly the beast is mostly responsible for contention on Vodacom's backhaul links by failing to upgrade backhaul link capacity for which Vodacom has to pay Telkodemonopolies...the monopolistic beast has for years crippled its own ADSL service in order to protect its Digicrap revenue stream, why should Telkodemonopolies not cripple all of the wireless broadband services as well that use Telkodemonopolies links for backhaul...

Can you say anti-competitive practices?

And if you own 3g hsdpa in europe then you have a huge income or huge representation of working skill, not all people their can afford it anyways
