Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

(There are two other initiatives under way to bring improvements to Durban...

Welcome back ranger.

How many months are we looking at for implementation?

KZN has had bad service for close to 5 months this year, I'm just trying to figure out how much longer we'll have degraded service so one can plan for the future.

It seems the procurement issues were finally resolved on Friday, and we should be able to address the problem immediately. There will be some temporary impact for about 20 minutes after the implementation.

Should be getting better as of now.

I think 5 months is an exaggeration, seeing as the Durban PoP launched at the end of Feb and ran under-utilised for at least 2 months.

The immediate problem should be resolved as of now.

The other improvements should be completed by the end of September.

We had issues for two months at the beginning of the year, could have been related to jhb pop. This current issue is in it's 3rd month if I'm not mistaken.

Either way I just want it to work like it was before.

ranger, you have an alleged customer here who was allegedly told by somebody in Telkom's "upper management" that TI is not for gaming and torrents and he has "confirmed it".

Is there any truth to this?

I've been lobbying Telkom to step back from this new draconian policy, but no reaction yet. They do indeed discourage gaming and torrents - that has been confirmed, so don't let anyone tell you it's rubbish.

Have you tried the escalation centre? If they don't react then go ICASA.

No.

CEX team (a specific subset of upper management that uses too many consultants) doesn't know what they are doing and are not vetting their comms with product management or technical, who have washed their hands of the results od the CEX initiatives.

Gaming traffic that can be recognised is always prioritised for all users regardless of thier usage or fair usage status. FUP enforcement can, for other reasons, possibly impact gaming prioritisation.

Fir gaming traffic that is not recognised, the experience will be better on a capped account.

That may be said, but gaming traffic is affected and torrents also, so what the news release said is happening in practise.

We, as the customer have no clue that there is a communications gap and neither should we. We only see the product as it comes out of the line. There are clear indications that heavy shaping of certain activities are occuring. I can tell you that we cannot game properly until very late at night when all the players have gone to bed. Daytime torrents (including weekends) have suddenly been virtually switched off.

Is nobody noticing this?

No, not seeing it here in PE but I'm on 10MB uncapped and don't try to download at 100% of line speed. I limit my torrents to 2mbps during business hours and 6mbps during nightsurfer.

What is the point of having the uncapped account then? I'm just asking because softcap would offer a better experience then and value for money then considering its prioritized and the fact that night surfer data is free and 1 hour extra everyday?

You can do all your downloads during that time at full line speed and still have full unshaped like data during the day.

I was responding to the "Daytime torrents (including weekends) have suddenly been virtually switched off" claim. If I disable the speed limits on my torrent client I can get close to max speed but I'm running a business and need the bandwith for other protocols.

I agree that capped accounts are preferable if you want to max out your line 24/7 but you're going to pay for the priviledge and it's still going to be a "best effort" service.

As a 10Meg uncapped customer you are probably in a different category as a large spender.
Try doing full speed torrents on a weekday afternoon and tell us what happens.

Guess, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for, I'd be pissed off if I thought I could get the same service for peanuts.

Makes sense. I was just thinking about it. I see some users that got cut off after x amount of usage. With the new very strict AUP Telkom is enforcing on their uncapped users it would be interesting to weigh up the softcap vs uncapped accounts in terms of value for money, speed and possible data usage.

I have applied for a 20Mbps line now. So lets just roughly compare data just for fun.

do Elite is R601 for 50GB softcap and 20Mbps line.
do Uncapped premium plus is R999 for uncapped and 10Mbps line.

The do Elite gets unlimited social media and night surfer downloads. So lets say you download 500GB during night surfer times. It will take you +- 10 days to download 500GB in nightsurfer times without touching your daytime 50GB cap which still runs @ full speed.

I do not have Uncapped premium plus like you but I think downloading 500GB on it will mean that you will be throttled? If not your daytime torrents are throttled maybe? Will your still get full speed on your 10Mbps line if you downloaded 500GB @ full speed during night surfer times on your account?

So I think with the new uncapped AUP that is being enforced it might not be the best option to take compared to softcap.

This is just a VERY rough comparison to see how the uncapped accounts stack up to softcap accounts. I think they might be enforcing the rules too hard on uncapped accounts or maybe the softcap accounts are just that good.

You don't say which region you are in, or have it on your profile, and you don't say what game.

Currently done 450GB on TI and sitting at about 50% green on the tracker BUT I suspect I could well have been throttled if all those GB's had been moved during business hours. I'd guess that 75% is moved from 19:00 thru 07:00 with the majority during Nightsurfer.

... I've also got 60GB capped with axxess which I use break up my TI sessions so I'm not seen as a 24/7 user.

Yes. The traffic does not count towards his usage profile and throttling 'algorithm'.

He could do 800GB in night surfer time with zero impact. Same goes for a capped 10Mb/s account.

Well if that is the case then the uncapped account is a better deal I guess however there are people that posted in this thread that it does effect shaping and throttling...
