Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Guys, im sure there's mainly fanbois here, but can i get an unbiased opinion.

Firstly, looking at getting a 2mb line, is it better to get it directly through telkom, or through another ISP? why?

Secondly, how does the uncapped account compare to other ISPs? Fair usage policy? Shaping? Throttling?

Cheers.

My preference is to keep the line with Telkom. I think the end of the day there is no great differences, just what suits you better, tho I do have a preference for Afrihost.

Anyone else in the CT are experiencing weird interwebz?!?

Google and Bing pages does not load....everything else seems fine

We had a planned change to migrate a peering router (the previous router was put in temporarily and reaches end of support soon). I think due to the parties involved it couldn't be completed in dark hours, and I think there were some complications due to a mixup by the data centre operator.

You can see the impact a subset of our traffic had at the peering location.

That would probably have broken more things ...

Maybe, but then it could be set back to original setting. However such a test would at least provide an indication as to whether the problem is being caused by dns. Obviuously 8.8.8.8 is not the only dns that could be used for a test, but it is one that easily accessible.

Nope, all clean, monitor with netlimiter and nothing happing on the only machine im running on line...
will have a look tonight, hopefully it was a one time issue last night :D

#fingerscrossed

Is anything eating your download/upload bandwidth?

Is anyone aware of a congestion problem with the Fourways exchange? I am in the Lonehill/Beverley area. I only get 4MB even though I am signed up for DSL Fastest, and my router is connected at 10MB.

After making a query earlier in the week, Telkom got back to me, but the person I spoke to was somewhat vague; he said that my speed was reasonable. I think what he was getting at was that I should be getting up to 10MB, not 10MB exactly. I don't have a problem with this, but 4MB is not anywhere near 10MB.

Are you sure they've got you on 10MB Uncapped? Check for the following line item on your Telkom bill:

Home uncap prem+ @ R503.51

Ah. That would explain it.

My bill seems to indicate that I am paying a 10MB line rental portion, but a 4MB Telkom ISP portion. I don't understand how this happens?

Just a heads up for some of you night owls or night surfers. We have some maintenance in the Caoe Town site. There shouldn't be significant impact, but bgp will reconverge a few times after midnight. In theory, it should be smooth enough that it doesn't impact anyone, but we know that in practice theory and practice are *not* the same. There will probably be noticeably higher latency to MWEB during parts of the maintenance.

Thanks, will warn my kids.... gaming.

So that is probably the cause of my lag and every once in awhile, a bad lag spike playing GW2 - WvWvW - reset last night and we got a tough matchup - going to be a rough week, hoping the internet holds up, so us SA folks can be competitive.

Resorting to posting a personal issue I am having with TI here - maybe this has happened to someone else before, but I can't find a similar case.

For nearly 3 days now I simply can't access my Uncapped 4mb account. My modem responds with "Username or Password error". When I put in my capped Web Africa details it runs perfectly - so modem and line are fine.

I have been through 5 calls to to 10210 - getting increasingly frustrated.

They confirm that my account is "active" and I haven't been kicked off for non payment or some AUP violation (I have paid and my usage hasn't been unusually high, been a customer for about 18 months). One customer service person said it looked like I was "locked", but then couldn't say why and ended forwarding my call - which ended up nowhere.

I also at one stage got a connection briefly - but it was with an IP in the 212.212.212.xxx range - which I have seen elsewhere on MyBB referred to as the quarantine pool (unusable).

Pretty sure I have been booted off the network for whatever reason - but can't get TI to acknowledge this and let me know how to remedy this. So now I wait for a fault report to be resolved, while using a backup service at my own expense.

Any suggestions to how I can reach someone with sufficient know how to get me back online? Would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Use the telkom chat, did you move? Using a different number than the original? Had similar problem and it was due to the account locked to my previous telephone number.

@qwert, send a pm to ranger... in case he misses your post. He can help you.

Thanks - have done so. Will report back if I get somewhere, hopefully I can save someone else the headache if there is a quicker way to resolve this.
