Telkom Internet Mail Store Maintenance - Mail Store 7

Dear Subscriber

In our endeavour to improve customer service, Telkom Internet would like to advise you that there will be emergency system maintenance performed on the mail store hosting your mailbox.

Impact:
You will be able to send and receive mail. Mail older than thirty days that is still stored on the server will however not be accessible for the duration of the change window.

Change Window:
>From Friday, 15th April 18:00 until Saturday, 16th April 10:00.
... about time, I've been getting random reports of "no such mailbox" rejections from clients.

Hey guys, got a bit of a mystery I need help solving. I have ****ty international routing for gaming. Like I permanently have to use WTFast and other VPN/tunneling software that is inconsistent and expensive.

Here is a traceroute of the problem:

1 <1 ms 1 ms 1 ms myrouter.Home
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 13 ms 12 ms 18 ms 197-84-96-137.cpt.mweb.co.za
4 11 ms 16 ms 19 ms 534.po-channel50.cpt-ipc-1.optinet.net
5 172 ms 173 ms 156 ms bu-ether1.cpt-p-1.optinet.net
6 157 ms 155 ms 164 ms w1-po0-3-5-0.thd-p-2.optinet.net
7 165 ms 160 ms 165 ms be-2-776-thd-up-2.optinet.net
8 158 ms 156 ms 155 ms be-16-776-thd-linx-1.optinet.net
9 198 ms 200 ms 199 ms linx.as6663.net [195.66.224.252]

I live in Cape Town and I have always gotten around 160-170ms in most international online games. My current latency sits around 200-230ms. It's not the end of the world but 90% of my internet use is gaming and I pay every month for a sub-par service. This problem seems to be on Telkom's side (isn't it always lol and I have no idea what to tell them. Every technician I speak just ums or awe's saying that 'the line is testing fine' and 'it's a best effort service'.

My line is perfectly stable and syncs at a good speed - so in Telkom's eyes nothing is wrong. Who do I speak to at Telkom about poor routing? Who even has the power to change it? Do they even care about international service maintenance?

The exchange: linx.as6663.net [195.66.224.252] seems to be the culprit because it jumps from 150ms to 200ms going from the UK to Amsterdam. That's just pain wrong. The jump usually is around +10ms instead of 50-80ms. Is there anything Telkom can do about their node quality with the London exchange? Why can VPN services route better?

I've tried Crystal Web, Mweb, Telkom's ISP, WebAfrica and Afrihost. Nothing can get around Telkom's routing??

1. Did you use a TI account for these tests?
2. What DNS settings are you using?

The test I copied was with Mweb. I've experienced this problem across all ISP's. Mweb is my main account because it gets the lowest latency of all the ISPs while still not completely mitigating the actual routing problem.

Current DNS setting is 8.8.8.8 with IPv4.

I see you have now posted your query in the correct ISP's thread.

Good luck.

Who`s the Telkom rep on here please ? I`m trying ( really hard ) to cancel my Telkom account via Call centre. Maybe I can forward you my account detail and you can assist ?

My 20Mbps line is running like a 2Mbps line :( , works fine on Afrihost.

Do anyone have a problem with high pings / webpage timeouts during the day? (Western Cape)

My 4mb account barely get a stable 40kb/s during the day (weekends included) and with pings of >400ms to Google. This will continue until around 10-11pm when it "corrects" itself (no disconnects that I've noticed) and pings are proper <20ms and downloads @ >400kb/s.
Speeds are then fine until 10/11am when it all starts again.

This is now like clock-work everyday for the last 3 weeks.
I logged a case last week with Telkom, but it was closed the next day without improvement.

Firstly. Check if there isn't a device or devices running updates at those times. We had a problem our side until we discovered that the Xbox was the culprit.

No, nothing like that.
Also, I've checked on the Telkom usage tracker and I'm still green. So no unnoticed abuse of my bandwidth that I'm not aware of.

Anybody else got problems on youtuble?
Clicking on links like videos etc on their site does not work, that red progress bar at the top gets about 70% and then nothing.

Edit: Problem went away after 2 minutes or so.

Well i've had this problem with Youtube for some time now. To be honest Telkom account performance has severely diminished for some months now, looking to move by the end of May if things haven't improved.

Hooked the Chromecast up for the wife (iPad to her main TV)...

She has been klapping Youtube videos for the last few weeks wat vir niks skrik nie!!

So no hassles there.

She's addicted... it's so bad that she hardly ever watches DSTV. When I first suggested this to her, she was extremely skeptical. Now she wants to know when I am cancelling DSTV !!!! Had to explain that I will do it once they install fibre here - within the next 6 months.

Good evening.

Please can someone help me. Up until this morning my ADSL has been performing really well. I live in northern KZN. Now since about lunchtime, I get massive LAG (loss up to 40%) in games, I cannot stream without constant stoppages and even skype has interruptions. I have a 2MB line.

Here are the stats from the SAIX.net speedtest. I think the problem has something to do with the jitter. Its exceptionally high right now.

Download Speed: 1587 kbps (198.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 450 kbps (56.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 39 ms
Jitter: 1074 ms

I can also post a trace route if needs be but nothing that out of place there.

Thanks for the help

Well its time for Telkom and I to part company. Our infra-structure is just too frail to support any ADSL because of lack of maintenance so we have no choice but to go mobile. Voda 10G plus 10G at R299 not so bad and our internet experience is bound to be a lot more enjoyable.

Bye

Telkom LTE is pretty good from what I've heard, uncapped for R599 I think and very fast speeds.
