Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

May I ask what you and others are getting on www.speedof.me on TI?
Hmm, don't have much faith in this test. Results constantly vary and are dependent on your router capabilities. I use IPCop as my firewall and on normal settings I get this:

Speedofme2.jpg

... turn off QoS, VPNs, traffic shaping and proxy and I get:

Speedofme results.png

... oh and I run linux (8mbps line) :)

Google services still hit and miss, but mostly miss in the evenings :( I can't live like this!

I can't remember if you were in Gauteng or not ...

A change was implemented in our Gauteng site this morming to complete the changes we started last week, which should reduce the likelihood of the traffic management and caching systems introducing any delays reaching Google services.

Unfortunately there seem to have been a number of DSLAM backual failures in the region this morning ... so we actually saw a bit less traffic than usual.

My own automated testing isn't seeing any of the symptoms that were observed before.

Please let me know if you are still seeing the issue as of this morning 06h00.

The same change will be deployed to the other sites by Monday morning (Cape Town tomorrow morning, Durban Monday morning). While this should have benefits for those sites, they shouldn't have been seeing exactly the same issue.

These changes, if they have no adverse effects, should pave the way for us to re-implement a previous change which should allow us to not be as strict on p2p during busy times. Unfortunately, other changes are being implemented next week, so that change (being less strict on p2p) will probably only come in the first week of November.

I don't seem to have issues with torrents during the day, reckon I average about 75%+ of line speed and many times running at full speed. Is KZN somehow different? It's always been like this (except those two months we had issues).

Does night surfer include weekends? Meaning from -00:00 on Friday to 07:00 on Monday morning?

Something happened here at precisely 5:30 am this morning. TI died, as did another capped TI account I tried. Five minutes of internetlessness!

Then all was fine. It was you guys, wasn't it Ranger?

That change you warned us of: "The same change will be deployed to the other sites by Monday morning (Cape Town tomorrow morning, Durban Monday morning)."

No funny after-effects here - all is well.

Yes. There was apparently a problem on one processor on one element in the traffic management platform when this change was implemented. There is apparently a fix for this behaviour in the next release, but we know how to identify and address the issue when it arises. We may just need to implement a bit earlier than 05h00.

well my ti uncapped account officially doesn't work now. had to swop over to my capped afrihost to browse the internet.

Red bar... power user... is there anything I can do to get it working again?

A FUP is a AUP is a FUP is a PITA!

That's fine - I only get up at 5am! :D

I spoke to telkom today regarding my line speed and they said that even though I'm on a 10mbps line the ISP portion of my account (home uncapped prem) hasn't been upgraded so I'm still on 4mbps speeds. Fair enough but it got me wondering why, when I run a speedtest, am I consistently getting 8+mbps speeds?

Are they perhaps over-prioritising speedtests?

I'd be keeping quiet: you are paying for 4 meg and getting 10 - win!

There, someone with credibility has finally asked the same question that I have been asking/implying for many months.
Bwana - may I ask what speeds you are seeing on alternative tests such as www.speedof.me or www.testmy.net ?

Is your actual experience matching that of your MyBB SpeedTest? Obviously, at the same timeframe of running the test.

My after hours (download hours) speeds are generally fine (consistently getting 350-400KBps), but during peak I often see the normal, peachy speedtest.net results, but actual browsing and streaming experience is dial-up style. A test on www.speedof.me then usually confirms my actual experience.

I hope I am wrong and that the problem is exchange related - seems easier to fix than general prioritization, FUP stuff etc.

You are confused, he's on a 4Mb/s ISP profile and he's wondering why he's getting higher speed ratings on speedtest. His normal download speeds are in line with his 4Mb/s profile.

Nope - no confusion, nice try though.
Simply trying to understand possible over/under prioritisation of speedtests, regardless of ISP profile not matching line speed, that's why I asked for alternative speedtest results.

Surely the author of the post in question can decide whether he/she feels I am confused and why, and then decide how to comment.
After all, my question was directed at him/her.

That said, some of your posts in the thread have been helpful, for which I am thankful.

Is it worthwhile going for Telkom again, im in the process of changing ISP.... what are your thoughts.... please help

I haven't don't alternate speed tests. My downloads tend to run at full 4mbps speeds so I'm not complaining as such - I'm getting what I'm paying for.

I'm a little concerned Telkom might be getting more credit than it is due when it comes to MyBB's speedtest results though. This may well be a flaw in the design of the speedtest itself.
