Because it's a binary (base-2) system, 2^1=2, 2^2=4, 2^3=8, 2^4=16, 2^5=32, 2^6=64, that's why you've had 4, 8, 16, 32 & 64 bit computers. It's just how digital systems work as transistors have 2 states, on(1) & off(0).

Disclaimer: That was from when my line was completely broken. I still average 100+ though. Some weeks my line is perfect, other's it throws a tantrum. The price of living amidst nature.
Keep a spare 1gb webafrica account handy. Next time you think your 'line is throwing a tantrum' login to the afrihost, you will be amazed. Its not the line, that isnt how lines work. Its telkom, they are a terrible ISP>
