Telkom internet not Hard Capping (DotCO)

In that technical outline document though, they said that ISP's would be able to throttle their customers - is this not the case? Can an ISP not just provide 64k access to the client for national/international - or is that what they are doing, but only allowing their own site access so that customers can buy more GB's, in which case the ISP won't have to pay excess for the data the customer would have used when still on 64k but with unrestricted access?

I would word that better but its been a long day :)

I can confirm that no throttling, shorter session timeouts or hard capping is done on our Telkom Internet accounts. We continue to do more tests.

Mine was hardcapped yesterday, today I have both local and international bandwidth

As much as I hate telkom:

I still dont get it. if i grow mealies i can choose to sell mealies directly to the public or people can buy from me and resell.
1. If i sell more mealies myself who should should i be more fair to, my direct customers or my resellers?
2. Am I even obliged make sure that my resellers can make fair profit. Surely if you dont want to resell my mealies, you dont have to.
3. If the mealies i sell to you is different to those i sell to the public but I'm not stopping you from buying the same mealies as the public to resell.. Am i doing anything wrong? I though the whole thing is for you to cook the mealies then resell it as a tasty product.

What you have described is a free market. ADSL is not.
1. If you were the only one allowed to grow and supply mealies by archaic and anticompetitive laws, you can dictate what purchase price resellers must pay. This purchase price can be set at a whim, and resellers have no choice but to purchase from you. Eg you can set the sales price to resellers at 1000% of your cost price.
2. You can also sell mielies at 500% of your cost price direct to customers. This will force all mielie resellers who HAVE to buy from you out of business.
3. The result will be a market with consumers paying 500% markup pricing.
4. There is never any incentive for you to optimize your costs or be remotely competitive, as customers and resellers have no choice but to accept your pricing. This leads to an incredibly inefficient market.

End of the day - consumers are ripped off and paying far higher prices than in a non monopolistic market.

we are talking about bandwidth provider right? IS is also in this market. Yet they choose not to undercut telkom by much. same price + 2x local that costs nothing to provide.

Actually, I can do with more ADSL lines and routers for my tests. I would prefer to setup and monitor the tests. If you are in Cape Town and want to help, please PM me. I will only be able to publish the results Friday night, because of the case.

EDIT: That is Friday, 11 November 2005.

Spindrift, IS still has to lease most of its connections from Telkom, bandwidth is NOT an open market.

ok, more people should be allowed to grow more mealies..but for now, should we really be demanding that the mealie grower sell the same inferior mealie that they sell to some resellers to everyone? isnt it better to make sure they dont sell any inferior mealie at all?

Guys, thanks for the great response. There is enough now. Thanks for everyone that volunteered.

IS still have to pay Telkom a fortune to connect to IP Connect. So, in theory, do SAIX. But no one knows what SAIX pay to Telkom.

Telkom SAIX and Telkom Internet are divisions in Telkom. No real money changes hands. If it did, VAT and other taxes would have to be paid. SAIX and Telkom Internet operate as profit centers inside Telkom.

Thats right.. you still had international bandwidth..
