Hey peeps

anybody else having issues on Telkom? I have had high latency and slow speeds since the weekend, my afrihost and webafrica are 100% no problems

Welcome to the club, Hennopspark Exchange in Centurion has been @*&!ed for the last two weeks, then you log a call with telkom, the tech phones you and say "Yes there is a problem with the exchange, it is on 110% capacity and there is nothing that he/they can do about it" then they just close the call. :(

Thing is I know in my case its not the exchange as Webafrica and Afrihost work fine but any case I just cancelled my Telkom account they have been crap ever since they did that soft cap upgrade a few months ago.

lol, hopefully you didn't cancel your ADSL line and Voice too

Well I did put it in big bold writing that I don't want my line cancelled just the ISP part but this is Telkom so u never know they will undoubtedly cancel my line aswell

Hey peeps

We have some hardware upgrades coming this weekend (Gauteng) and the weekend after for Cape Town, if everything gos according to plan, to address some problems that may be causing this.

But, without any details (I don't seem to have a PM from you with e.g. username), it is difficult to tell if there was a different problem at play.

In my case (2Mbps uncapped in Centurion), there isn't significantly higher latency now, but I was getting lower throughput on Youtube etc. on Monday evening.

High latencies and intermittent internet connection speeds in Pinetown, nr Durban

I'm experiencing identical issues in the Pinetown area. This has been ongoing for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Telkom is both the dsl line provider and ISP. At least this week Telkom didn't just close the fault, but have kept the latest one open, although no feedback has been provided. When I phone the story is the same: "A Technician was dispatched and they're working on it". Curiously, the line speeds are reasonable even if slower than they should be, jerky and erratic during the day, but around 5 in the evening it drops to almost zero and not even the speed tests will run. It finally starts coming back again with slow and erratic internet access around 9pm. Even the pinging times vary from 20ms to 90 for the same local Telkom server.

Any suggestions ? How can I find out whether they're working on the exchange and when that work is likely to end. This is incredibly frustrating.

Hi all I'm a real nooob on this forum,

I have a strange issue with my 4mb ADSL line. The throughput seems to be okay but the latency is 600ms or more to the gateway.

I reported the problem to Telkom and to their credit a technician visited the next morning :). However after checking the line, he made some adjustments but the latency is still 50 times more than what it should be???

So, do any of the Guru's here have any idea what or where the problem could be?

BlackSheepWrg:

2 things you can try:

Phone 10210 and go to ADSL technical support (speak to a consultant) and ask them nicely to:
1) reset your port
2) change your mode to ADSL 2+

I have done this a few time when my line "degraded" and it has helped.

Thanks for the reply Jasweb

I phoned 10210 and they were very helpful, did as I asked and reset the port. Unfortunately this had no effect :(
I then tried changing the mode to ADSL 2+ and the line wouldn't sync I think that the exchange I'm connected to in Ruimsig (according to http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RRUS02 ) doesn't support that mode.

I still don't think its the line at all. The noise margin is fine and according to the modem I'm not getting any errors on the ADSL side. The throughput is also fine, its just that the latency is 600ms or more.

You can see from the test below if I ping SAIX in Rosebank, I don't get any loss just the unusually high latency.

Code:
ping -n 30 rosebank.spdtst.saix.net

It seems to me that something within the Telkom network in this area has something amiss, I'm sure I can't be the only one with this problem in the area. Maybe I'm the only one who requires the lower latency, browsing the web or downloads work perfectly, try a remote desktop session, accessing files through a VPN or an online game and its rather frustrating. If it were the case that upgrades in the area were the cause or some other problems surely the support center should be aware of the problems?

I'm just scared that because the thing is "working" that the problem doesn't get any attention.

Thanks Big Bean, not exactly something I wanted to hear.
That's not going to be a quick fix then :(

My Telkom account has been fast here still no hiccups noticed.

What DNS' are you using in your router or is automatically assigned?

I Have the same issue with my line. in the morning its fine but after around 3PM my latency shoots up to 100 -200 ms. i Did log a fault again this morning and they phoned me to ask what the problem is because i have logged 7 faults in the past 8 weeks. so i again explained it to them and after being on the phone almost and hour the technical officer said he is picking up a issue on the exchange, something like a disout or DSout or similar to that. i did ask him if that will resolve my issue and he guaranteed me it will. so we will see later this week if the issue is resolved. Does anyone know what disout or dsout or whatever they call it is?

Thanks

Hey Blacksheep

I can chime in here since I'm on the same exchange as you:
Rosebank has been pretty bad congestion-wise over the past few days, I think Monday evening was the worst of it though, as its pretty good now.Tracert results pretty much match yours from my Trendnet modem and Asus router.
4 meg uncapped all through Telkom -also have Plugged capped unshaped for when Telkom goes wonky :)

Then you using Cape Towns ones by default then do you stay close to Cape Town if not you should change your dns'.

Check my sticky in Adsl Discussions for the DNS info at the end.
