I phoned Telkom to complain about the slow speed on P2P. I was told that yes they are investigating this problem but as very few users are complaining about it they do not see it as much of a problem. As far as I can remember this has been a topic of conversation for some time now. So are they just not logging these faults or are people generally just accepting this poor service from Telkom?

After all I pay for my 3Gig why can’t I use it like I want. I mean if I decide to use it up in one day so be it. I would most probably be inclined to buy another r3Gig from them the next day. I sort of got a bit despondent when it took 9 Hours to download 9.27 Megs of a 1.2 Gig file.

SO PEOPLE start reporting your slow speed and lets get it sorted out.

erm correct me if I'm wrong, but I think P2P is shaped/throttled, afaik. I would imagine that it can't really be investigated, as they are the cause, and they know, even advertise it.

I dont understand? Sure its easy to shout at telkom, I want full p2p speed but why dont you guys try out our Proxy before shouting at a a wall (Telkom)

Atleast you can make the most of what you have with this solution.

Telkom is the reason p2p is buggered. I am also annoyed by this because more and more sites are distributing content through p2p networks. Ubuntu linux is a good example. The band Babyshambles is another example... There are plenty more...

If you are running straight p2p on a shaped account you must re-read what shaped means. suprised they did not ask you if you using shapped account and explain it.

Yip it is, but it worked ok running at around 30Kbs until a few month back then 2Kbs. Not my problem if they made a cock up and are now running out of bandwidth. If you look at the one Telkom web site it tells me that from 192 I can download movies music and so on, all P2P. Pity though these are all pay services in US$, so I would have outlaid even more money only to find out I cannot do it.

IT”s MY 3Gig I want to do with it what I want, after all I pay a huge price for it. :p

I don’t think I could have handled that on top of my frustration as it is. ;)

I know and have just set it up and it works great, but that is not the point. Why does another company have to come into play to sort out what should be working anyway?

Because Telkom are in control and at this point in time all we can do is bitch and moan, write to ICASA, and hope they get something done.

Its as frustrating as all HELL, but not much you can do talking to a telkom tech, or trying anything else. The only way to over come the situation right now is via one of the proxies until telkom do something about it, or ICASA does.

I personally hate P2P with a passion.. I mean really really hate! I've seen how it has destoryed my fun time with what I pay for my ADSL, I'm also not getting what I want I've also seen how it messes up my networks at work when people do it here (so Yeah.. I've also shut down all those ports so they cant do it at work) Unfortunatly like Antowan said, more and more of the Legit systems are moving towards p2p so I have to accept it (still dont have to agree with the 100 gig downloads in 2 days.. but thats not for this discussion :) )

You can also make sure that you have the portforwarding set up correct on your Router, it might help somewhate

We simply remove the barrier on telkoms only services ;-)

So "partly" we offer you a service from Telkom lol

Because I hate P2P and the slower the P2P apps run... the faster I work.. and I'm guessing by the same reasoning.. The guys who use P2P would rather not have everyone know or else their connections will be slow :D

That was a joke BTW (except where I still hate the Apps)

Truthfully.. I dont know why nobody did :)

Thanks, anyway.

The problem is not the P2P it’s the lack of bandwidth we have at the moment. I mean we don’t actually want them to give us the service we actually pay for. It might just confuse the **** out of us. I did some testing on the unshaped account apposed to shaped.
Shaped P2P no go, http fast
Unshaped P2P ok, http a bit slower than shaped.

Unfortunately I don’t have the reading with me right now but that was the just of it.

/Puts on his Flame Proof Jacket
Well firstly The lack of bandwidth is a bit of a problem, The Sat 3 Line can handle what we are pushing out and receiving, Telkom just wont allow it.
P2P is a big part of the problem though, As stated earlier I dont wanna get into that but look at the international trends, almost all the University's now Block P2P apps, All Companies do (Major ones anyway)
P2P currently takes up the largest portion of internet traffic worldwide, and its getting worse(Stats are here somewhere on the forums, or do a google search)
Even US and EU ISP's are now starting to throttle P2P ports

Though hmm P2P us not really the reason.. its the users that go overboard. Though unfortunatly that will always happen in anything and everything in life. During the last week of the month and the first week of the month Everyone either tries to CAP their accounts and get as much downloaded as they can, or those that where capped last month now try to catch up and fill up the next 100 gig HDD they bought.

The rest of us.. well we just have to grin and smile and smear more vaseline on.
