Telkom Investigation.

Yes But!

Now if you have ISDN and iffinity call, you can download p2p all weekend and week nights. I tried to see how much i could download in a month in call more time, last year this time.

It was just under 5gb for the month. Now that cost about R500 all in all. Everybody could have done this its no big deal, I mean its only 64k. But the problem comes in where the 64k is now 512k and more people like to do it and its no longer a past time its a sport!

These business people do have a point, those ones who trade currency and granny at home who get pi$$ed off when her latency to Piggs Peak starts to suck.

But our use should not be at their expense, I should be at our own expense and yes it is expensive for us too.

Think about it. You can download load 4 high quality cds on a DSL 3gb cap. Or you could go and buy the cds.

Either telkom or musica take your money!

Well firstly The lack of bandwidth is a bit of a problem, The Sat 3 Line can handle what we are pushing out and receiving, Telkom just wont allow it.
P2P is a big part of the problem though, As stated earlier I dont wanna get into that but look at the international trends, almost all the University's now Block P2P apps, All Companies do (Major ones anyway)
P2P currently takes up the largest portion of internet traffic worldwide, and its getting worse(Stats are here somewhere on the forums, or do a google search)
Even US and EU ISP's are now starting to throttle P2P ports

Though hmm P2P us not really the reason.. its the users that go overboard. Though unfortunatly that will always happen in anything and everything in life. During the last week of the month and the first week of the month Everyone either tries to CAP their accounts and get as much downloaded as they can, or those that where capped last month now try to catch up and fill up the next 100 gig HDD they bought.

The rest of us.. well we just have to grin and smile and smear more vaseline on.

Yes you have a point and that is why Telkom is throttling the P2P. Unfortunately it not just about trying to see how software you can download, there are other applications for P2P and those that are using it in a responsible manner are getting screwed.

I can agree that a business will block P2P as it does not have a place in most but there are those that are running VPN and are not getting close to the 3Gig a month but are now unable to run there services.

My point is a have bought 3Gig for the month and just by surfing how much of that can I use? How fast do you need to surf? 192 should be more than enough. Thinking about it I have a dial-up account and am surfing quite ok on it. I am seriously thinking about retaining this for certain applications where ADSL seem to fall over.

It’s MY 3Gig ….. and I want to use it like I want!
:o

Well said slowgo, can I use your 3Gig the way I want to, aswell? Pretty plz...

And if you read above... I also specificially said that I also use P2P for certain applications, As did Antowan who I quoted when I said that. I fully agree that there are legit reason for P2P, however unless there is a way that these ports are regulated effectively. There will always be people that abuse it, and that will effect all of us.

While I agree its your 3 gigs and Your paying the same as me for it so I know how expensive it is, I wouldn't want to share that... But ... as I also said above and as you quoted:
The rest of us.. well we just have to grin and smile and smear more vaseline on.
