Telkom is being attacked from all sides

Telkom customer requirements below:
(And we know they will be ignored)

Good News. hopefully they get more competitive now.

Was bound to happen.
Welcome to 2011 Telkom. Maybe now you guys will start picking up the pace...
Or, you know what? Just die and give us the copper and fibre. Thankyouinadvance.

According to analyst Irnest Kaplan, he respects both Moholi and Telkom CFO Jacques Schindehutte, but warned that without the right people lower down to execute their strategy “it’s not going to be so easy to execute on all those things

And right there is where the wheels fall off. The number of competent people who do their job well are far outnumbered by those who know not and couldn't care less

They dug their own grave - and are still busy doing so !
Spot on! The problem is that nobody at Telkom or Government have a clue how to fix it.

You can take Telkom out of the post office...

It boggles the mind that a company with a monopoly in the fixed line market, with all the resources they need, the financial power they have (had?), can still make such a huge stuff-up of their service.

But let's be reasonable, first they screwed over their consumers to such an extent that there is a deeply embedded hate for their brand, and they have the government using them as a 'jobs for pals' playground. With that handicap I can understand their current situation.

Telkom should not act so surprised. We all knew this was coming

Telkom need to implement an aggressive ADSL strategy because there are so many services which they can spin-off if they had minimum speeds of 2Meg and upper limits of 40Meg. They’ve delayed enough with the development of ADSL speeds; they should actually be also offering VoIP services to compensate for the falling voice revenues.
I would love to see a successful Telkom; we would be better-off if they can turn themselves into a world-class telecoms company! There is currently no company with resources if utilized well to make a bigger impact than Telkom.

My appeal to Pinky is push hard and act without haste, there’s a lot that can be achieved!

Its monopoly is the reason they are dying. They thought they could get away with sub-par services, products and infrastructure. They only have themselves to blame.

In all fairness it's not about the right people lower down being unable to execute their strategies, this guy has it completely backwards. The problem is that they're understaffed lower down, thanks to all the job cutting a few years back. The previous morons in charge only saw $$$ and thought that cutting jobs would give them more $$$. Now Pinky and co. sit with legacy problems.

The problem is three-fold:
- they need to become more competitive via price cuts and added value
- they need to hire more people to cope with demand and support issues.
- their response and lead times are unacceptable. Waiting 45 minutes for somebody to answer your call, or 3 weeks for somebody to install a line is pathetic. Again this may be related to being understaffed.

And they'll need to significantly increase the pace of infrastructure development. It's unacceptable that people are paying the same price for 4/10 Mbps because some exchanges still do not support 10 Mbps.

If we think about it carefully... The demise of telkom might cause bigger problems for us... more complications... I think it would just be in everyone's best interest if there was some (divine) intervention to try and turn the company around so that it is not driven by greed.

It's not too late

p.s. I hate them just as much as the next guy

At the end of the day, nothing beats ADSL when it comes to price, reliability and latency, to mention a few. We need Telkom to perform well in this department. I think Telkom has enormous potential but they have been hamstrung by poor management, terrible decision making and simply failing to understand what makes a good business tick. Their 3 months free ADSL promo is a move in the right direction but they need to do more. There is no point in critisizing them all the time. For one, I used to hate Telkom but lately I am very pleased with their customer service and excellent ADSL product. Lets all unite behind Telkom.

I agree to an extent, but I wouldn't want to encourage them too much, then we'll just be back to square one. Competition is the only answer, and if that doesn't create a better Telkom then nothing will. If you think about it, the only reason why they have improved a bit lately is because of the pressure they've been coming under. The difference is that if Telkom crumbles, we need other companies to be able to pick up the pieces and be able to provide the same services. This is why ICASA and DoC needs to pull their fingers out their ass.
