Went to my folks yesterday and saw something amazing....

Telkom is apparently laying down fiber optics in the town where my folks stay - nicely done Telkom

/runs away and hides from the angry crowd :D
 
Big orange rolls of "cable" ? If so, then it's not TELKOM. In DBN most of the lines going down are NEOTEL (heard and confirmed from a good source!)
 
OK - could be Neotel then...

Only thing is that my folks stay in a town approx. 30 km from PTA - if it's Neotel then it's cool to see they are in the rural towns where connectivity are most needed !
 
Also saw Neotel rolling out some fibre today.
 
Those big orange rolls?...are they fibre optics, or just sleeves for later when the actual fibre optics get shoved through them?

I am sure the ones I saw in Pintown were just hollow sleeves going in the ground

Sleeves for "blown fibre" makes more sense and much easier to upgrade, or maybe they will be using trained rats to carry packets of data?
 
Rumors from my Telkom source who knows a few NeoTel techies is that NeoTel techies are not taking leave this festive season, many are working overtime (getting paid nicely for it apparently) to get NeoTel up and running ASAP - I was told that many are working on residential services in CPT (don't know bout rest of country).
 
i wonder how much the techies would ask if i told them they must connect one fiber point here by my pc!.... :D
 
Telkom have been putting in fibre for years. They can laugh at Vodacom's poor attempt but not Neotel who in a few months has managed to put in about a tenth of the same. Give them a year and they can do what has taken Telkom almost a century to do.

Considering at least 60% of the cost is for putting it in ground I just hope they put in enough for their own use and others' so there isn't another shortage in a few years time.
 
Hey Prometheus....This is a bit off topic

Lookin at your sig regarding Humpty Dumpty....he was not an Egg....Humpty Dumpty was apparently some Massive Cannon in Medieval times...( or somewhere thereabouts)

It was sitting on top of some castle wall for defense, and was giving the attacking troops massive headaches, until they targeted the wall where Humpty Dumpty sat, blew the wall apart, and it all came crashing down...and the cannon was broken.

I stay in KZN (South Coast) and about 4-5 months ago these pretty cables where being laid (sp) ... niice and pwetty !!:D

I don't know about the cannon bit but there was a siege tower called Humpty Dumpty used by the cavaliers (king's men) during the english civil war. It was however so poorly built that it often came toppling down when it was full of men. Hence it sat on a wall and had a great fall and all the king's horses and all the king's men could not put it back together again. :)
 
I work for a bank, and I happen to know for a fact that we will be switching to Neotel once they go live. They have allready laid down all the cable and as soon as they can prove that its stable we go over. We will probably still have telkom backup lines (incase of Neotel growing pains.).

But good to hear that there's some progress being made.

Would love to see the looks of surprise on Telkom's face when 99.9999% of their customers defects to Neotel :D

(will think a figure closer to reality will be between 60% to 75%)

But not all will be able to switch over - rural customers and customers with specialized lines.
 
I want a FTTH (Fibre To The Home) connection, and I dont mind paying R 2'000 for it, no problems !!

Will Neotel supply us with FTTH ?

Hosting/Datacentre connections to the masses!!

I just want an uncapped connection for R300 or less. It can even be 512kb/s for all I care. If Neotel can provide that instead of coming with the usual bandwidth is expensive excuse they would have done enough for me.
