Telkom job cuts and employee performance system explained

MyBroadband has also received information that Telkom’s new employee performance measurement system is causing unhappiness among some staff members.

According to the source, the new system has a direct impact on the promotion, salary increases and bonuses of employees, and has already lead to resignations at the company.

I don't know what new performance measurement system entails, but could this be a good way to help trim the fat?

yes get more people to leave telkom like your not under staffed with idiots as it is

is it there to get the idiots out and get proper staff that can do the work in? now it is no longer free ride?

They definitely under staffed! Stay in Johannesburg lodged a support ticket over 3 weeks and out of the blue the Technicians came to my house today, which is normally 24 - 48 hour turnaround time for them to be at my premises. 1 trainee, 1 qualified technician and the manager who was in the area.

They not from Johannesburg, they from another province! I think they were here to help with all the rain/backlog

While Telkom as a company may be inefficient and overstaffed, their inability to execute even with a supposed excess of employees is a far bigger problem. That only gets worse when you cut staff and to me indicates poor management, the same poor management that's going to decide what areas of the business are hit the hardest with retrenchments.

I was thinking that also, but lets be honest telkom does not care about consumers if you want adsl well guess what. telkom is your only option

Took me over three months to get through to a competent person - so I hope all the unhappy staff are those who I had to deal with, you useless bastards... Go work at MacDonalds flipping burgers , if you can.

I have been lucky all agents I have dealt with have been competent, well at least honest. Can't say the same for the managers, they too scared to commit to anything, just like the responses above say nothing towards answering the questions.

No, to do that Telkom would have to put the employee through an "Incapacity Process" as defined by the BCOE Act. They cannot wait for assessment time and then tell the employee he/she is useless and must pack their bags.

If Telkom implemeent and follow the processes correctly then the employee's assessment will impact his/her salary increase (zero?), bonus (zero?) and promotion prospects (zero?).

From what I understand from speaking to some of my mates, is that one of the biggest gripes is that the new system is being implemented retro-actively (w.e.f. April 2013).

Telkom job cuts, employee performance system explained

Telkom dismisses concerns regarding its new employee performance management system, and terminating fixed term worker contracts
Nothing wrong with the strategy of terminating contract workers' contracts if you have sufficient internal resources to do the work yourself. If those internal resources are in the wrong area then they should be transferred or they should be terminated as well.

Unfortunately in many cases the wrong people get out and the idiots remain for the free ride.

By international benchmarks, Telkom over-staffed (or definitely their opex is too high), but obviously the voluntary processes and removing contractors most likely prunes the skills and leaves the crud - the opposite of what's needed.

The unions protect the unskilled in the areas where most pruning would be required. I'm not sure about these performance schemes but having people resign doesn't directly indicate a problem - it may be a good thing.

I agree. Many functions are outsourced by international operators, including billing and collection, call centres, etc. This is where Telkom is caught between a rock and a hard place due to their SOC status and influence of their biggest shareholder.

The unions are not involved in this latest performance system amendment as it only applies to management.
