We are thinking of getting 4mb uncapped in the house, by upgrading our normal telephone line to adsl.
Our line does support adsl and can be upgraded to 10mbps, i checked on the telkom site.

The number of the telephone line in the house is the main house number. We have a phone upstairs and downstairs to answer in case it rings either way.

My question is:

Can we upgrade the line to adsl, and still use it as a telephone line upstairs and downstairs, and as a fax line additionally. Of course, if the a fax is pending, the line will be engaged, however i was just wondering if we can phone, receive calls, fax and do internet all on this one line ?

thanks

ADSL runs parallel to any voice service (which includes old-school fax), it doesn't work like a dial-up modem where you would have to engage the actual line to connect to the internet. So you can surf the internet/check mail or whatever you do (surf porn?) and still be able to receive/send faxes and make voice calls.

In fact, you might want to get a free fax-to-mail number and free up the fax machine that way leaving only voice in the end...(which you can always VOIP with using ADSL anyway via Skype etc)

sure, ADSL is more of a bolt-on service than an upgrade. you'll just need to install microfilters on the phones and fax to prevent their low frequencies from interfering with the higher frequencies ADSL runs at
