Hi there

I want to get ADSL and I know I will pay for Line Rental, Line and Data but I really dont want to make any calls (yes, I know Naked ADSL would be perfect, no such thing in SA unfortunately) but I want to know when I get my Telkom line set up again whether or not I have to pay for all the little things they try sneak in like Itemised Billing, CLI (whatever this is). I want to know if I can get away with only paying the R140 odd to get the line so that I can get ADSL (still deciding between MWEB and Afrihost).

Thanks to all :)

Don't take any of the "Closer" packages. Just normal line + ADSL.

The Line Rental (if memory serves) is about R148 and I pay R169 for 1mb line on that promotion they got which includes a modem and 5gb bandwidth (which I give to my dad and I use my MWEB 1mb account, so he gets 2mb internet while I get uncapped 1mb internet)

You shouldn't pay anything more than that unless you opt-in for these extras

At the same token it might be better to take a closer package as they often include free installation. At the end of the first month he can then down grade to any package....

OP do not take a modem and data unless you want a 24 month contract....

Thanks.... I am just going to get the line re-activated. Not going to mention ADSL in the Telkom shop at all. As soon as I have a dialtone I want to get it done through Afrihost or Mweb. Soon as you mention ADSL in a Telkom Shop, forms and signatures are needed. Lol.

Installation was free. Anyone serious about getting ADSL will easily be able to commit for 24 months.

It suited me because I'm paying for my dad to have internet at home too and he doesn't use as much bandwidth there with me up in JHB anymore.

Just remember (and they don't always tell you this, even though their survey asks if someone explained it to you), but you pay double the first month for whatever you're getting because it's not in arrears.

So if you get installed on the 1st of Nov, end of Nov you will get a bill with Nov and Dec on it. Same way if you half way through the month, you will pay prorata + next month with your first bill.

I'd highly recommend against having your physical ADSL line with an ISP. There were 0 forms for me in getting ADSL, and I've had several lines before.

I ordered this last week.

Closer 1 (i think?) - R167 pm, free installation - if i ordered it alone, it would be R600+- instalation.
Ordered 1mb DSL once phone line was in. - self install.
all done in 7 days. No extra costs, nothing.

For once, some amazing service from telkom. Applied online for my phone line, the rest was done by phone.

If you are trying to save costs then get a Telkom Do Uncapped bundle which you get a discount on and then you can also apply for a 25% discount on your ADSL line. It really is great value for money.

Also look for Telkom voice packages where they offer free installation and then simply downgrade the next month to a normal line rental deal.

I would NOT hand the adsl line over to a ISP, way to much hassles! Done it once, never again.
