Telkom Line Speed

Some of the international tests are a bit fuzzy - there seems to be a bit of trouble with international lately. Which ISP are you with?

Try one of the local speed tests here for a better indication if there's anything wrong with your line.

edit: anything around 320kbps is normal, you won't get 384kbps due to overheads.

My ISP is Telkom, and I also have an account with WebAfrica.
I experiance poor speed with both accounts.

Speed test on local server Openweb =
test 1 = 140 k
test 2 = 90 k

If I take my laptop to another location ( Friends house near by) I get 256k plus

Does this mean its the telkom ADSL Line that has a problem ?
When I look at the router settings is says 384/128 ( is this the sync speed ???)

Well, try replacing ur micro_filters or move them around. Make sure all ur other phones, extensions, etc.. r running thru a filter.

Yes, those are the correct sync settings.
If else fails .. bump the router a few times if it's a TK one :D
 
Unplugged all equipment except the rourter (Telkom Mega WR100)

Could it be a problem with the router itself ??
 
Ah, now we getting somewhere. Yes, do that. Reset the router or power cycle. Might be a faulty MEGA PROBLEM. I wouldn't touch those router's with a wooden stick ;)
 
yeah you see you're syncing at 384, but you wont necessarily get 384 speeds... my problem is a bit different, im syncing at 1024, when it should be 4 meg (and it was 4 meg a few days ago)

1 . I disconnected all devices except the ADSL Router and still got shockingly low bandwidth (ave 60 max 120 kbps, testing on local (Telkom) servers and others

2. Packed up my LapTop and Router and went to a friends house, connected all my equipment in the same configuration as at home and guess what ? great spees 320kbps
(even on international tests )

My deduction is the line at my residence is faulty.

Now the big challange is to find out how to get Telkom to react !!!!!!

Don't hold your breath. Their usual response (well in my case at least) is that if you can access the web they've done what they said they would. The fact that SGS BF2 forums take 18 minutes to open on a 512k line is not of any importance at all. :sick:
 
Still Waiting

OK Nearly a week now and Telkom are still working on the problem.
I have phoned them daily after holding for 20 to 40 mins each time.

I have noted that my upload speeds seem fine at 110kbps
Down load is the problem at 90kbps to max 150kbps.

I did look at the router log file for network stats
Transmit
Tx PDUs 1988
Tx Total Bytes 267536
Tx Total Error Counts 0

Receive
Rx PDUs 2703
Rx Total Bytes 2896069
Rx Total Error Counts 313

Look at the Receive error counts, it this no too high ?? Indicating errors on the line.
 
They must like you! Only 40 minutes on hold? For me, anything under 2 hours is like a miracle!
 
Do you know what an acceptable error count is ?
Is mine (above) too high ??
 
Can you post your linestats such as the downstream and upstream noise margins and attenuations. Usually you can get this information from one of the menus in your router otherwise you might be able to get it from the command line interface via telnet. See below.

You can telnet the router directly from Internet Explorer etc. by typing telnet://192.168.1.254 (or from Dos - telnet 192.168.1.254 etc.) and pressing enter. Just remember to change the IP address to correspond with the one being used by your router. Then enter your username and password (username might be root on the Mega 100WR) and this should open some kind of command line interface. If you enter a command like - wan adsl linedataf1 OR wan adsl linedata far OR wan adsl linedatan OR wan adsl linedata near etc. you can normally get a lot of additional diagnostic information from the router. If you post this somebody may be able to help you further.

GaryI, I have left my router connected on an IS line for about 3 days straight downloading 24/7 and also have a 384K line and a Mega100WR2. My current stats are as follows.

Transmit
Tx PDUs 5032183
Tx Total Bytes 1378375267
Tx Total Error Counts 0

Receive
Rx PDUs 5917750
Rx Total Bytes 3540741561
Rx Total Error Counts 85

Hope it helps you out. It seems as if your line is seriously doddgy. I think my line is fairly doddgy as well as its not nearly as stable as my friends 4MB connection.

Good luck trying to get Telkom to help you out! :D
 
OK So it took some 20 days and over 6 logs to the hellkom call centre.
I phones each day for feedback ( thankfully I have a speaker phone to hold to 40 mins each time)
I am not sure what they did but the line is now running at the correct speeds.
When I asked what the cause was no one can answer
