Hi all,

Having an issue with a telkom mail server. Currently using pop3.telkomsa.net and in Thunderbird for the last two days I get the following issue when opening mail:

Add Security Exception

You are about to override how Thunderbird identifies this site. Legitimate banks, stores and other public sites will not ask you to do this.

Server

Location pop3.telkomsa.net:110 - Get Certificate (Press on this and nothing happens)

Certificate status

This site attempts to identify itself with invalid information

Wrong site

Certificate belongs to a different site, which could indicate an identity theft.

Unknown Identity

Certificate is not trusted, because it hasn't been verified by a recognized authority

Can't seem to get rid of this message.

Anyone else had a similar issue?

Thanks

Have you tried calling the Telkom Internet helpdesk @ 10215?

No issues on my telkomsa.net account... but then I'm not using Thunderbird.

I am using Thunderbird, but not Telkom email server. No problems, but I set up a Telkom account for a friend and she is having the exact same problem. I called Telkom and adjusted the settings to their instructions, but the problem persists.

Just read this, but get the OP's 'issue' when I change the default settings to those shown below ??? (Thunderbird/Linux)
Over the last 12-24 months there has been an increasing amount of email and ftp account hack attempts. These attempts obviously get better with time in that the perpetrators learn common passwords used by users etc. Please make sure you have 10-12 characters in your password and include numbers plus upper and lower case.

An increasing problem has been the use of forwarding accounts setup by the perpetrators. Common webmail facilities on most hosting systems allow the user ability to setup forwarding accounts for the mail account. A forwarding essentially means that any mail sent to the mail address gets sent on to the forwarding address. The risk is obviously that most users will simply change their password when they believe their account has been hacked, but few check the forwarding account setup.

The use of the forwarding account can be used in various ways, but if your account is related to payments or orders the risk is high, particularly for international traders. For example; a monitored company finance mail account obviously allows the forwarding account holder to track all orders and invoice mail to and from clients. At an appropriate time the hacker sends a "company" formatted mail informing clients of a last minute bank account details change.

International traders are at risk when using "free wifi" services and don't use SSL for mail facilities. Phones too tend to be pretty weak in the area of security. Take care when traveling and make sure you use SSL ports when collecting mail.

Here are some general settings that could help:

POP3 Settings
Incoming Host: mail.domain.co.za
Secure SSL/TSL POP3 Port: 995 (Recommended)
NON SSL POP3 port: 110 (you will need to uncheck SSL)

Outgoing Host: smtp.domain.co.za
Secure SSL/TSL SMTP Port: 465 (Recommended).
In SA some ADSL providers (MWeb, Telkom) need this to be Port 587

If you prefer to use IMAP please use the following:
Incoming Host: mail.domain.co.za
Secure SSL/TSL IMAP Port: 993 (Recommended)

Outgoing Host: smtp.domain.co.za
Secure SSL/TSL SMTP Port: 465 (Recommended).
Some ADSL providers (MWeb, Telkom) need this to be Port 587

Most major ISP's do not allow use of port 25 for SMTP and recommend port 587 if you send mail using an external (not within the ISP sub network range) hosted smtp server.
