Telkom Media clarifies planned IPTV offering

And what the hell is all that Telkom Do Broadband stuff ??

So how much does this ADSL2+ line cost then, sorry I'm sure I missed something here but really how much is the rental for that line without that TV crap......

Now assuming 1 would need some special software crap from telkom aswell so I'm guessing there would be 2 accounts 1 for "IP on TV" & 1 for DSL.

Wouldn't all these uncapped subscribers be part of those abusers then, OMG how will the infrastructure cope :eek:
 
again south africa is the exception to the rule. one line delivering 2 things, being billed seperately. it's crazy.

What I wonder is, when we have our 384K line, do you they bump us up to 20mbps or whatever for the IPTV and then what happens to the DSL rental price? Assume the IPTV would have a minimum of 20mbps so you would have to have their premium service (20mbps) in order to get IPTV. Why must things get soooo complicated?

I think we've all know this subconsciously for a while, but now Telkom have finally graduated to blatantly waving this fact in our faces. :) They should look up hubris in the dictionary, though.

And clearly, they are not going to provide ammunition for "drastic reductions" in the cost of ADSL

IMO, strikingly similar to their Closer packages. Free landline voice calls but NO WAIT, calls to ISPs are not included and u have to buy bloody internet minutes at an extra cost!!! :mad:

It's the Telkom *spit* way :mad:
 
local bandwidth thing makes no sense.. if this is a separate company as they claim, how much are they paying big brother Telkom for the bandwidth used between their clients and their servers? 2ndly why is it that independent ISP's are charged more for this? and then.. *rolls drums* if they can hook it directly to Telkom media servers why are they not allowing ISP's to link to their server farms directly and let their own link out determine thru whom the international link goes or what services they offer?
 
If you currently have, say 512 ADSL offering and then elect to have IPTV (ADSL2 20Mbps) I wonder if Telkom would manage to throttle the ADSL internet portion of your line?
 
Just wondering here , how will one actually view IPTV on a TV , will there be some sort of decoder and is that included in the R320 a month ? or will we be ripped off again and have to pay 2k for that as well
 
Oooooh I just saw Neotel's offices on TV now...sexy! Now if their products are just as sexy we can all move to them and leave Telkom to watch Teletubbies over their stinkin IPTV.
 
In short they are crooks. There lies from the past is busy catching up to them. Their claims (especially for local) with regard to bandwidth is now "holding" them back from progress. Interesting how on the one hand local bandwidth appears not to be a problem at all and CAN BE uncapped, anlimmited and even unmetered, but on the other hand they are charging us for the very same bandwidth claiming that it is expensive.

Interesting also then that no "revolutionary" uncapped local packages have been released by Telkom, or even "free" offerings. They were obviously hoping that it would slip by unnoticed, mwhahaha.
 
exchanges to ADSL 2+, a technology which allows for downlink speeds in excess of 20 Mbps

kiss your cap goodbye in 1 day of using the internet.. :sick: with my 24mb il use
2-3 gigs on a gooday... there gonna have to make 3gig cap atleast 30 - 40 gigs
otherwise its pointless and expensive having 20mb line. ;)

Knowing the beast that is Telkodemonopolies - as we do know it all too well, my guess would be that ADSL2+ running at up to 20Mbits/s necessary for IPTV, would be a new DSL speed selection with a higher than '[A]DSL up to 4Mbits/s' monthly ADSL Connectivity|Access rental fee.

So, Residential line rental for '[A]DSL up to 4Mbits/s' is currently priced at the exorbitant monthly amounts of: ZAR99.92 + ZAR516.00 == ZAR615.92, which obviously excludes an ADSL ISP Account fee for Internet Connectivity. If you want IPTV from TelkodemonopoliesMedia, which requires ADSL2+ running at ~20Mbits/s, then the monthly line rental will no doubt be much more than the ZAR615.92 for 4Mbits/s, and then you have to add on ~ZAR320, so the minimum charge just for IPTV and no internet connectivity would in reality be far in excess of ZAR1000 per month - but I'm sure Stevie Hayward will apply some of his defunct arithmetic and announce that it only costs ZAR320 per month :rolleyes: - where that ZAR320 is in itself [from a consumer perspective] already too expensive for IPTV...
 
Content delivery servers

So, do we have content delivery servers in South Africa?

Try delivering Live or VOD content off a web server to not only 1000's of viewers, but 1000's of concurrent views too..Ha ha ha

Definitely will NOT buy into this nest of corruption and extortion. I dont have DSTV because I dont watch enough TV to justify such an expense, now Telkom are more expensive. They can dream on.

Even less than R100 is too much, considering its 4 - 5 channels of something I do not want to watch. Why have that when I have E-TV, which I dont watch, and dont have to pay for.
 
I see no way this will make economic sense. Considering Telkom's current ADSL prices the service you'd require for IPTV is going to be extremely expensive.
