Telkom Media gives content tariffs

The tariffs for bespoke content ranges from R 576 000 – R 1 200 000 per hour for Drama, R 120 000 – R 240 000 for 30 minutes of Comedy and R 36 000 – R 60 000 for Talk TV

Well, that was about what i expected, its not that expensive, if you live on your 170ft yacht sipping martinis all day.:(

i think those are producing tarrifs, which in turn gets passed to us cash cows, ok my yacht is a lot smaller

So Oprah is actually the cheapest show to produce, yet people watch that drivel religiously...

Interesting!

But it's internationally produced, so I suspect it actually costs more than any of those prices listed by Telkom (which are for local content).

I'm sure the ratio between drama, comedy and talk show stay fixed no matter which country it's produced in. I could be wrong, though.

Oprah makes her money in the US and could therefore sell her product to SA and other markets basically at cost, or even below that. Why do you think we have so much US content on our TV and films? Its about 10times cheaper to buy content from the US than it is to make it here. Though local quality is not yet on average the same as that of the content we buy, it will only improve if local producers are given the opportunity to produce and improve their skills.

More interestingly, how does these figures compare to the local content prices offerd by the SABC and MNET? I know the SABC has been accused by nearly everyone in the industry of paying peanuts for local content - I suspect MNET maybe high, simply because they have a quality standard that must be met. I mean, shows such as Snitch, Known Gods, Amalia, etc are of fair to high quality, including the scripts, editing, sound mixing, etc.
