Hi guys

As you will see in the announcement area I have just arrived back from the Telkom meeting. I wish I can bring you a great deal of good news, but this is not possible. We are seen as a small minority of disgruntled users and therefore they can not change a service that satisfies basically all users. I questioned them on their facts regarding user satisfaction, but they said that no objective investigation of any sort is not possible, and that this site does not serve this purpose. It is therefore impossible to validate any facts.

The other rather curious fact that Steven mentioned is that they constantly tests the service (from Tucows international), and that their international speeds are on average 300 kbits/sec, and at peak times never lower than 120 kbits/sec. I hope we can raise all these issues in their promised improved communication.

I will post a more comprehensive summary of the meeting soon.

Regards,

RPM

With all respect to Steven and Hans, I believe they are highly incompitent. They probably the type of person who buys a PC from a supermaket.

According to Hans from SAFM interview. Q. How much is 3 Gig.
"3 Full Length Movies"

They sound like internet NEWBIES, anyway I had enought of them!

RPM lets get an mirc channel up and running, then all the users can chat in realtime. What we need is to put more pressure and media coverage on this matter. How in Gods name can they say that we are only a small number of ADSL users. They did absolutely no research because i wasnt asked whether im satisfied with my service.

What is the size of a full length movie?

3 movies....well it depends...

If its VCD - its 1.2-1.3 Gb per movie = 3.6-3.9 Gb
if its DivX - its 700 megs per movie = 2.1 Gb
if its DVD (hehe) is about (correct me if i'm wrong) 4-5 Gb per movie = 12-15 Gb

[:p]

***Internet ??? what is it ???***

Well done so far, RPM.

Fact is: this forum has done some damage to Telkom. That's why they are unhappy. Unhappy enough to try to get us to stop "misinforming" the media. It's a pity they see it in these terms, as I think the majority of members are not out to do damage to Telkom - we simply want them to listen and improve our service.

I am disappointed that Telkom continues to insist we are just a minority. Even if that were so, I cannot believe that our numbers are so insignificant as not to warrant being taken seriously.

What do they base their statement on that the majority of users are happy? And what is majority - 51%, 80%, 98%??? I find it strange that they make this statement and yet say they cannot or will not substantiate this with facts.

I absolutely amazed that they claim their regular speed tests average at 300kbps. That's on good days but no ways the average. It is worthy to note that this is still only 60% of the theoretical maximum. Not very impressive. In a first world country, people would be up in arms about that.

What do they mean by trying to improve the communication. With whom? About what?

Based on their feedback, I think their willingness to meet you was mainly motivated by a desire to get us to shut-up. We must not relent.

Well paf, I think it is standard political trick to make your enemy believe it is part of a small number of disturbed individuals. I wouldn't get upset about it. They hope we will go away if we don't get past them and if we believe that we are actually a bunch of selfish gameplayers. It is important now that we familiarise ourselves with many areas around ADSL and ICASA. We should know the technology well and we should know the laws governing Telkom well. We can hurt them but it will require study.

Maybe we are a minority? but I think it will not be for long. If all ADSL users knew about the site I doubt that we would be a minority.

If you know anybody who has ADSL, tell them about our cause and to come and check it out. I personally know about 5 friends with ADSL which I have all invited to come and take a look and participate.

I would agree with Telkom....to the extent we are the vocal minority, but I would not say the majority of ADSL subscribers are satisfied.

The problem lies in the fact many people simply wont bother to voice thier opinion , a case of 'why bother it wont help' syndrome.

I mean if the petrol goes up how many people shout 'this is ridiculous', and 'I will not put up with this ....' but do nothing in reality because they think in the end there is nothing that can be done.

I think , as ckleynhans pointed out we must be wary of tricks, this response from Telkom is an attempt to dishearten and discourage forum members to the point the forum dies.

"Make your enemy believe he is weak and he will be weak"

I was disheartend when I first got Telkoms reponse from the meeting but after a period of thinking I decided even if the worst case scenerio came to pass and nothing happens, doing nothing at all will encourage Telkom to not consider customers. By voicing our opinion we at least let Telkom know that we are not sheep and will not take any old service. We demand service from our telco that is reasonable and fair to all parties concerned
