Hi

Does Telkom Mobile LTE work with a prepaid simcard? I am planning on getting the Huawei E392 U92 that supports the Telkom mobile 2300 mhz frequency. Has any one tested their prepaid sims on 8ta lte and got it working or will i need to get a contract sim (according to their data contact center) for it to pickup the lte signal.

I really dont know why Telkom must always make things so complicated, as all the other networks support lte just by activating it on their prepaid simcard.

Please advise.

Thanks

I would also like an answer to this.

8ta 3G is really poor where I live in Illovo, Joburg, and I would like to test LTE on prepaid before I commit myself.

I already have a 2300MHz TDD modem (E392).

The coverage map shows that I have 3G and LTE, but the 3G doesn't really work.

I am using Telkom Mobile LTE on prepaid. :) I too wanted to conduct my on trial before signing an ironclad contract. I was assisted with a so-called Bluefish SIM from a helpful gentleman at Telkom Mobile Clearwater Mall. ;)

I'm pleased to say that it looks like I'll be going the contract route ultimately with pretty impressive results so far. I'm chewing through the Anytime 5GB bundles a bit quickly now - and the contract offerings are attractive in comparison.

@Wirelesswarrior how much did your hardware set you back, did you purchase directly from Telkom/8ta store.

I would never sign on the dotted line as things might change come next year more data, more value etc, rather load 60gig+60gig go big data for R1800 :) hopefully 8ta can bring bigger bundles in future

R2700 to be precise via an online auction. Ironically one of the 8ta trial recipients decided that LTE is way too expensive despite being bang in the coverage zone (30MBps+ without an external antenna).

The Smart Internet prepaid bundles do not support LTE sadly.

Edit: there is definitely a conflict in Telkom Mobile's LTE for prepaid. The terms and conditions state it is not available yet it is. I now have to wonder if the 25+25 and 60+60 bundles will work on LTE after all.

Perhaps @Telkom Mobile can shed some light and clear the air for us all? (Ugh, is there no Mention plugin on this board? :( )

To clear up some confusion on this topic.

Telkom mobile LTE is working on prepaid, including special tariffs such as the 60+60 (I just posted this message over an LTE only connection on a 60+60).

One trick is that some older SIM cards (mine was an old 8ta) will not connect to Telkom Mobile LTE network. Just go to a Telkom store and do a SIM swap. I am posting this message from a SIM which wasn't working this morning but is now working perfectly following the SIM swap I did. Although the people at the Telkom Mobile store had no clue what I was talking about and refused to do a SIM swap for an excruciating afternoon. Eventually I just destroyed the old SIM by crunching it to bits in the store. Turns out it works so now I am happy.

The peeps at Telkom shop also refused to sell me the B593 router for the longest time. I managed to buy one on Saturday, paid R3600.00 at the telkom shop (have an invoice and receipt to this effect) but I am not certain if that is a correct price. ZAR 150.00 x 24 = ZAR 3600.00.

Hang on, how did you buy that B593? I want a spare one at that price too!

I just used my most winning smile and was quite insistent that they should take my money in exchange for goods. Apparently Telkom Mobile were selling them for cash at the RAGE expo recently.

I find it quite astounding that it is so difficult to exchange money for goods with Telkom.

I previously scoured the net and the only offerings were: TM 36 month contract; bidorbuy; gumtree; few online retailers.

Honestly that price is very good. It really is a heavy duty 'industrial' piece of kit. Very expensive, yes, but this is the trend with all things LTE these days.
