Dec2012 I signed up a few Unlimited Voice packages at R1199 pm.

During the year press release was made that Data an SMS are included, and existing clients could have this loaded free onto their Unlimited accounts. So far so good.

Went to TELKOM store to be informed that only while on the Telkom network data and sms are free.
When there is no reception, and sms is sent or data used, this will be billed to the customre!!!

Heck!!

Now while sitting in Telkom Office I noticed my reception swing to MTN Edge, which means that it would be incuring costs had my phone decided to receive a whatsap or email!! LOL!!

How does this work?? :confused::mad::love:
 
Excuse my layman argument or reasoning.. please. How on earth am I supposed to monitor when my phon is roaming or not. On the airport for instance, in the building my phone switches to roaming. When I step out, I am back on Telkom. If I drive on the higway in PE my phone continuesly switches between roaming and Telkom. Automatically. Surely I am not supposed to be watching the little icon at the top left and switch the phone off while I am browsing, when it switches to roaming by itself? Please explain. This does not make sense to me.
 
Thats why reading the ToS before signing up was very important.
Once they have you hooked they forget about you & just collect the money!
 
Okay, tough case. TM have the option to switch/lock your sim card to TM only (phone help desk). Safer, but that means you won't be able to roam on MTN. So don't know how that would work for you.

My phone shows a "R" next to my signal strength when I'm roaming on MTN's network, that's how I know.

However, I got 300MB monthly data to use on any roaming network, so I'm not fussed.

Correct.

When you go into your phone settings, you can search for all providers and just select 8ta, or choose "Automatically Select", which will then switch between TM and MTN automatically, depending on signal strength.
 
The problem is that I have given these sims to employees. I raked up a substantial bill last year with Vodacom when they abused this with Youtube etc. Now it is also possible that the same can happen if I allow an open account.

PS Vodacom offers at R1999 unlimited calls, sms but only 1.5gb or 2gb.

Said employees can easily just reset these settings.
Either have TM lock sims or have these employees sign document on receiving phones to be liable to all roaming/out of contract data etc...
 
Thanks. Locking the sim to a network is the logical solution.

My view is just that is LAME.

But even with roaming enabled the switch is not effortless. Call gets dropped in urban areas and the downtime can take 30 seconds travellling at normal speed. In traffic jams it can be minutes. I never could foresee this. (LOL)

Forced to keep 2 sims, a Vodacom and TM. Well one good thing, I was sceptical about TM achieving sufficient coverage. We retained the VM sims on a payasyougo basis with additional handsets. It sounds silly but we each carry 2/more handsets. It IS anoying and definetely NOT meant for business!

When Roaming on MTN, your data will be cut off, unless you selected the option to surf at our of bundle rates, or you buy an All-net data bundle. In other words, data will not be consumed when you switch to MTN - it will be stopped until you return to Telkom Mobile coverage. You will probably get an SMS saying your internet is paused or something. Open your phone's browser to see the options page.

Alternatively, you can also add a small All-net data bundle to your Unlimited contract, for when you do end up on MTN Roaming and want your emails/apps to keep syncing.
