Telkom monopoly over

I have heard a few things off the wire about the SNO's infrastructure. There was a huge thing about PLC (Power Line Communications) a few years ago that Esi-Tel was trying out. Basically it worked by attaching a firbre optic cable to the grounding wire of a Power Line. There was alo rumors of some sort of wireless connection from the transformer to the customer's premise. This type of connection could work as it bypassess the major flaw with curent PLC technology namely interference. There were a few pics of the laying of the fibre cable via helecopter on the net at that time. I will see if I can find them and post the URL here. The biggest issue will still be where exactly the SNO will get it's international connectivity from as I would say that leasing it from Telkom would be extremely expensive.
 
It would initially have to lease this infrastructure from Telkom and said the timing of its consumer offering would depend on how accommodating it was.

That's what worries me !

Telkom could easily "oops" keep disconnecting parts of the SNO leased infrastructure and make them look like their service levels are bad.
I'm not saying Telkom will do this, but the opportunity presents itself.

Also, Telkom could make it difficult for the SNO to compete by charging an excessive amount for the leasing.

On the flip side, if the SNO play their cards right, they can "poach" some of the best Telkom staff as I'm sure they hold no loyalty to their bosses.

I think it's going to be nasty for a few years until the dust settles, ICASA are going to have their hands full, that's for sure !
 
If I'm not mistaken, Broadband over power lines (BPL) hsa already been deployed in some parts of Germany and other countries where they had replaced their copper infrastructure with Fibre Optics before DSL came out.

There are other forms of broadband-type technology, broadband-type infrastructure, both fixed and wireless, that we are looking at. And this is an area that we believe we are going to pay specific attention to . . .

Seems like when the SNO is ready to go, Telkom may have some serious trouble on their hands. As mentioned in this article it is possible to run cable DIRECTLY from here to Europe, cutting everyone else out of the loop and creating other international digital backbones. SO LONG UNDERSEA CABLE !!!!
 
The SNO will not have much impact... We have three cellular providers in SA and costs are as high as ever.... :(

I am leaving SA anyway so I don't really care anymore!
 
Broadband over power works fine on the long-haul lines, but when it comes to getting the broadband into the home, every transformer has to be bypassed, and it becomes ludicrously expensive, not to mention the interference caused by the typical house (Fridges switchin on/off, lighs, stove, old man simon in his garage with a circular saw and of course - sissy with her 2500W hairdryer). So they'll probablee use boradband over power to get into the rural area's, and then use RF for the last mile (into the home). I forsee a sudden surge in 802.11B wireless VOIP phones.
 
I think we'll just have to take it on faith for the moment that the SNO wants to improve things in our country. Telkom can do what they will but it will essentially fall to the new buggers to decide how they want to handle things.

They could completely throttle Telkom and take over telecommunications as we know it or they could become just a little brother of Telkom.

The one positive thing I see is that VSNL seem very keen on their stuff... including an offering called "TITI" :)

Don't you just feel like a major burden has been lifted off your shoulders to know that the end of the monopoly is neigh. no here!!

Yes it might take a while to implement but hey whats a bit more suffering going to do to us we have suffered long enough.

My frustration is finally leaving me and i feel confident to take the next steps to help out the SNO.

If it really means that i have to go and work for them then so be it.

Remember that they will have to hire a bunch of staff before they will be able to implement anything so at least this venture over the next year or so will be good for the economy in a sense.

I am very positive about the outcome of what has transpired over the last couple of months and am proud to be apart of the community that has taken a major part in the transformation of our country.

With regards to the ppl that visit this site and post on the forum i congratulate you on a job well done and that we must not let up but continue to push forward in a hope to find a better society and infrastructure on which to build for not only our children but our childrens children.

We need to make the world known that there is hope in our nation and that we will rise back to the position of a 1st world country with not only our infrastructure but also our strength as citizens.

Its time to push over the giants that are out their and YES they will listen.
Once they know that we are not ants but mice which the elephants are scared of then they will buckle and listen to our stories and change their ignorant ways.


Time to make it count PPL

So please don't just give up because of one small vitory. We are in this for the long haul!!!

this is my take on it. the cell providers ulimately run through telkom at some point - possibly the reason why there isn't much competition. from what eskom says, it seems as though their infrastructure will be independent of telkom. there is a possibilty that prices may decrease only slightly, but hey at this point anyone is better than telkom. i'll switch simply because they are not telkom.
 
Although the SNO is getting a PSTN licence, it has been geared to be a pure broadband supplier. They plan to provide each customer with a broadband connection and provide triple play services. The SNO partners already have their inter-city networks up and running. At this stage they don’t have any metropolitan networks, but all the major city councils have put in place extensive FO networks in their areas and they are all most likely to negotiate with the SNO to utilise these networks. Actually the city councils are hoping to make big $$$ from these investments, so don’t expect to get broadband from the SNO cheap-cheap.

Sounds mostly good Haggle... I'm sure the City councils are keen for cash (as always) so broadband will still be expensive. Hopefully over time, the councils will split their money grubbing between Telkom and the SNO which SHOULD result in cost cuts for us. Of course by the time that happens we'll all be old and gray so meh :)

theres always 3 sides to a story as craigsa has said...
his story, her story and the truth.
i have suspected for a long time that Telkom, like the emperor of that childrens story, has no clothes. They have not invested ininfrastructure like they should. They have milked a market they controlled for all it was worth and if you look at their activity over the last year at least, they have diversified into other areas, and they have become heavily involved in other african countries. Telkom knew long before anyone else suspected, that hteir days are numbered. The have set themselves up as a trading vehicle (listing JSE and NYSE) and watch, they will now concentrate heavily on infrastructure in Southern Africa and further afield. i will put good money on it that their end user service delivery (customer/retail) will dwindle and dwindle as they try to dominate the backbone of Southern African Telecomms infrastructural development.
It makes sense too - they can then fix the market price on wholesale telecomms connectivity. clever.
My argument may have holes and flaws - this is just a brain dump but my gut tells me i am on the money.
