Telkom is giving serious thought to switching off its 2G network to focus on 3G and 4G/LTE — and later 5G — in the process freeing up spectrum for data-led mobile offerings.

That’s the word from CEO Sipho Maseko, who was speaking at the telecommunications group’s annual results presentation in Centurion, near Pretoria, on Monday.

“Luckily, we don’t have a big base of 2G customers,” Maseko said. “Because it’s a small base, we can switch it off and have an all-3G/4G network.”....................

Terrible idea
The other bands are almost filled to capacity.
That is why so many people have network issues (across all networks)
With everyone on 4G there is not enough band and you lose signal.

This is solved by switching your phone to 3G or 2G only before making a call. You will have no call drop or network issues.
Switch back to 4G for data activities.
Remove 2G, remove that option.

Humm??? How will it remove the option if they switch off 2G, since 3G will still be there?
