Recently signed up to telkom naked dsl but the speeds has been crappy to say the least.
I signed for the 4mb dsl, as fiber is still being deployed and every month they say 2 more months
so needed something to compliment the Rain R250 hour package - which 90% of the time i dont have a issue with
initially had MTN LTE offering but use to cost me additional R400+ a month but okay enough about the background

- Since i have the 4mb dsl installed on average i have been getting speeds between 0.09-1.80Mbps on average

1. I would like to know those that signed up for the same or similar package experiences and speed results

p.s: Done tests with cable and wifi, different hours of the day and night , with all wifi turned off and just cable, with just one wifi device connected.

Thank you

using the following router : DLINK DSL-G2562DG
what stats would you like from the router :

Eish I've ordered mine, and even got my logon details in the wee small hours of this morning. My neighbour has it as well (albeit with a landline and they had it before this promotion), and with constant DSTV streaming from one device, multiple Android devices connected and doing stuff, still get a speed test result of 6Mbps for other shenanigans.

Ordered because of the crappy service I now get from Rain, crappy to the point that only one device can be connected at a time and get any kind of internet service.

Need to get the kiddies some learning with the online classes.

Wish i could afford the higher package but on a tight budget that is why I opted for the 4mb package

Is this the info you looking for ?

@safejack: With those line statistics ADSL is never going to give you high speeds. Do you know where your exchange is located? An attenuation of 50dB would suggest that you are >3.5km away from the exchange or there is a poor connection at some point along the line. Have you experienced higher ADSL speeds on the line previously?

Hi

If i am not mistaken the exchange is most likely between 1km -1.3km away if you are referring to the telkom blue box
On handful speedtest i have gotten 3Mbps +- but usually been early mornings between 1am -5am

@Jake45 - Thank you for the tip.
I decided to call telkom today and report the issue , they did a port refresh, standard turn off and on of the router.
still had the same issue, they told me if the issue is outside my house then there is no fee but if the issue is inside there will be a R350 + call out fee

Note: the Telkom guy came to install the router and the new point , which the original stats i got which is on-top when they setup the new naked dsl.

Then i remembered we had another telephone point in the house which you had to jiggle a little to get it to work.
so i plugged it into the old wonky point and as i thought:

So just want to say a big thank you to Jake for that hint.

Those are much better stats the previous one was horrible.

That said 4Mbps is probably the max that line can go hey you won't be able to reach even 8Mbps even if you tried.

Glad to hear that your speeds have improved. A downward attenuation of 39.8 means that your exchange would be roughly 2.8km away unless there are more bad connections. The exchange is usually in a building somewhere close by unless you are connected to a mini DSLAM in an outdoor cabinet. You would have to ask a Telkom technician about where your exchange is located.

I would recommend that you open up the telephone points and check that the wires are connected firmly to the plugs etc. The attenuation should not be changing by 10dB from one point in the house to the next unless the wiring has come loose or has become corroded etc. At least you should be able to get close to 4Mbps on the other point. At some stage Telkom was giving some customers 5Mbps on their 4Mbps lines but I'm not sure if they still do this.

they still going to send out a technician to check the line that they installed wonder if i will be charged the call out fee if they messed up the install on the line ?
The lady said anything outside the house is them and anything inside the house i pay for.

Guy came out to redo the line i get about 3.1mbps now which is way better
- asked if they can try upping it so i can get abit closer 4mb , advised best effort service, nothing they can do, unless i pay more. wish i could tell them that for their payment

Paying more wouldnt fix that issue, fibre is the only thing that will get you a faster fixed connection.
With those line stats you wouldnt be able to go faster than 4mb which is the reality for tons of places in SA.
You will be really happy when fibre is eventually rolled out though because anything will be better than that ADSL connection!
