Hi all,

I just wanted to vent about something.

I'm very lucky to live in a area of Cape Town where I never personally have ADSL issues - when I do, it's normally if not always ISP based - never the physical DSL line.

Recently I had some ADSL issues - I didn't initially notice it but I noticed my internet was slow and figured it was Afrihost - but because of work related issues, I let it slide for a few days - then one day I just got moer irritated and decided to do my trouble shooting - I found my DSL was connecting at horrible speeds, not 4096 - but we talking anything from 500 to 1900kbps.

So I logged a ticket with TelkomZA via Twitter and after a few messages - they told me there was some issues and would send a technician.

He came out yesterday and didn't take long - he told me that "The previous Telkom guy that did work recently in the area failed to connect 1 of 2 wires at the box down the road"

Now the last time I had DSL issues, it was basically the same story - each time a Telkom guy comes and 'plays' at the 'box down the road' they catch on kark and mess up my internet.

I'm not sure how many of you experience this - I'm not talking about cable breaks or stuff, I'm talking about 'them' messing up and then I sukkle - I'm tempted to lodge a complaint with Telkom accounts and requested them to 'prorata' discount my bill for the days I was off due to their kark work.

I've suspected the same thing happening as well. Last week my ADSL speeds were terrible, and I recall seeing a Telkom guy working on the nearest cable box just before. A couple months ago the same thing happened but had a completely dead connection for 2 weeks, after there had been some work. On both occasions I had to log multiple faults before it was fixed.

I fear every time I see the Telkom guy up on the pole, which seems to happen every few weeks, hoping that my line is just left as is. They should add an option to their fault diagnosis list: Did you recently spot a Telkom employee working on the box?

Interestingly last time I had problems, the builders up the road chopped our underground line with a spade.

Because of the nature of the fault, Telkom took 3 weeks to repair it,but didn't charge us for the month.

Telkom in our are is very good.

Lodge a billing dispute from the time when you reported the previous fault until when it was fully restored to your satisfaction. Request a rebate on your account.

I've done this.
And I've informed the @TelkomZA guys on Twitter - now we see what happens.

So this raises an interesting question, and maybe it's been answered already.. so apologies for asking... what sort of download speeds should you be getting... based on a % of your line speed, so I'm on a 4mb line and I'm downloading at about 400 odd kbs

Do you mean 400 KB/.? Because I have a 2 meg line that goes at 1 meg and I can manage 100KB/s

Look, there is alot of factors you need to consider, but lets assume all the factors are 100% then I get about 400KB/s

I don't watch my line like a hawk (like I used to) but I noticed I was having issues when I started downloading Battlefield: Hardline and noticed my speeds were 20KB/s - Origin always gives top speeds (just like Steam) and then the line would be 20KB/s and then 40KB/s and then 0KB/s for ages.

Yeah, thats where I notice my download speeds.. when there's an update for example on steam..

Okay wait.. I'm a rookie .. or noob here.. explain please?

Keep in mind that some 'accounts' are SPEED specific.
At one point - I had a 4MB ADSL but I had a 2MB account with OpenWeb.
Max speed I'd get is 200KB/s but when I changed over to my 'free 1GB' accounts (Afrihost, or Access) then I'd get 400KB/s.
